Oakville Football Opens with Tight Loss on Senior Night

The Tigers fell 10-9 to the Marquette Mustangs at home; Derrick Brown scored Oakville's only touchdown.

In a change of tradition, the football team and cheerleaders celebrated Senior Night at the season opener. But the lively home crowd couldn't help the Tigers as they fell 10-9 to Marquette.

Conners said the 2012 seniors were one of the best groups he’s seen at the school.

“They’re going to move on and do some good things athletically and others will move on and do some things academically,” he said.

The Mustangs almost scored again in the first, but Oakville's defense halted them to keep the score 7-0.

With two minutes left in the half, Derrick Brown tied the game with a 21-yard run.

In the third quarter, Oakville started making mistakes that cost them the game.

“We didn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had,” Conners said. “We dropped a touchdown in the end zone, fumbled on our way into the end zone and threw an interception in the end zone.”

Conners said the team will focus on executing assignments for next Friday, when they travel Parkway North at 7 p.m.
