One Mehlville High School Won't Soon Forget

Senior Corey Simmons has made a lasting impression on Mehlville High School.

By Sam Masterson, Staff Reporter

Mehlville High School senior Corey Simmons describes his last four years as, “Fun, tiring and immature, but at the same time a great learning experience.”

Simmons has never been part of a dull moment since entering the Mehlville High School doors.

From athletics to volunteering his own time, Simmons has been seen by many students as a man easy to love, respect and look up to. Just like his older brother, Casey Simmons, was a mentor to Corey, he helped his youngest brother Christopher around during his first days of high school.

As a freshman, he showcased his size and strength in the trenches of the football field and continued to get better throughout his four years in a Panther uniform. Simmons has been seen showing his sensitive side when he participated as a buddy for the Special Olympics. He also likes to put on a show in front of the Mehlville student body as a member of the Mantherettes, Mehlville’s all boys, non-competitive dance team.

“I had a lot, a lot, a lot of fun at Homecoming, it was a great experience,” Simmons said.

Chosen for the homecoming court would have been enough to satisfy the humble senior. Instead, he was the most surprised out of anyone and ending up wearing the crown for the rest of the evening.

“I felt pretty good, I didn’t think it would be me, and I was a little surprised,” he said.

Simmons said that he has had the most fun on the football field with his teammates and friends. It comes with no surprise that one of his greatest high school moments played out when he helped to beat rival Oakville as a senior. He woke up the next morning to see his name and face in the paper being honored with Athlete of the Week for the St. Louis County area.

Simmons hasn’t done it all by himself. Along the way, there has been one person he would like to thank for all his help. His teacher, coach and father figure, Kent Heinemann.

“I can talk to him whenever I need him, he is like a dad,” Simmons said.

Simmons already has his future goals set and planned. After graduating, he will report to Great Lakes, IL for 26 weeks of boot camp, and then go into the Navy. Upon completion of the camp, he is prepared to be sent to another country to fight for the country, friends and family he loves. Just like the easy-going fun guy that Simmons is, his reason for choosing the Navy over anything else wouldn’t surprise anyone.

“The water, I love water,” he said.
