Point Elementary 'Logs Off' For a Night

The national screen-free day kicked off Missouri Assessment Program testing at the school.

 hosted a Log Off, Turn Off and Go Night for students and their families, helping kick off Missouri Assessment Program testing. The event was held in conjunction with a national celebration endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Education Association and the American Medical Association. Millions of children and adults across the country pledged to turn off their televisions, computers and video games for the day.

The school took the national event one step further by hosting a night filled with fun activities for students and their families, including a pitching clinic held by former St. Louis Cardinals player Jason Simontacchi.

“It was fun to come to school and meet a professional baseball player and get his autograph. I had a really good time!” Point fourth grader Rachel Wherle said in a statement.

Families also spent the evening volunteering in the school’s outdoor classroom, participating in craft projects, playing family-style bingo, and reading together in the library.

“Our first LOTO event was a huge success!” Point Principal Jim Walters said in a statement . “It was really neat to see families come up to Point and play games just like we (older folks) used to play before all of the video and computer games came out. I'm sure this will become an annual event.”
