Son, Students Inspire Oakville Teacher’s First Book

New author Bart Jones is a teacher at Oakville Elementary School.

Oakville Elementary School teacher Bart Jones spends most of his time with his fifth-grade students, but wrote his first book for his son and students of all ages.

The science fiction work, Leaving Home in Time, mixes fantasy and adventure.

“I've always had little fragments of the story in my head for as long as I can remember,” Jones said in a district release. “I decided to write this for my son, Teddy. I wanted him to have a series of stories that would really make him examine the world around him.”

The teacher has always been a science fiction fan, but he was never satisfied with the lack of space and time themes. Jones wanted to provide his son with the genre that he was missing as a child.

Jones drew from his experience as a Communications Arts teacher and developed the book for his past and present students as well as his son.

“I want to show them they can do whatever they put their minds to,” he said. “We write and publish stories in our class, and I want them to know they can do this, too.”

Leaving Home in Time is the first book of a possible 12-book series and can be purchased on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The second book, The Deep Black Water, is scheduled for completion by the end of this summer.
