Viewfinder: Oakville Middle Schoolers Take Flag Raising to a Whole New Level

Sixth graders from Oakville, Washington, Berkley and Bernard Middle Schools competed to build a flag-raising machine in Tuesday's Rube Goldberg competition.

Even though classes had let out for the day, the Bernard Middle School cafeteria was abuzz with innovation Tuesday evening, as sixth grade students competed in the 2011 Rube Goldberg competition. A Rube Goldberg is defined in Webster's Dictionary as "a device or method to accomplish, by extremely complex and roundabout means, a job that actually could be done simply."

The Rube Goldberg competition encourages students to put their science skills to use. This year's mission was to create a machine that could raise a flag. Students were given everyday items as construction material, and were required to use a spinning top as an element in their design.

Washington Middle School's students Caroline Foster, Kristen
Carter, and Analise Huston won Best Rube Goldberg, and Oakville Middle School's students Lucas Arconati, Joey Fritsche, Tommy Shotton, and Trey Rossics won the Special Rube Goldberg award.
