Whiz Kid’s Accomplishment: Received “Best of Show” in Newspaper Sports News from the Sponsors of School Publications’ Journalism Conference.

Whiz Kid’s Key to Awesomeness: Andy Fernandez grew up playing and watching baseball, which, he professed, helped lead to his passion for sports writing. He is currently serving as the sports editor for the high school’s Prowl student newspaper.

“A few years ago, I was watching “SportsCenter” all the time and decided to be a sports writer. I figured this [newspaper class] was the best class to take,” Fernandez said.

During the March 7 Sponsors of School Publications’ Journalism Conference held at Webster University, his article about the Oakville girls’ softball team state championship received “Best of Show.” This is his first year on the Prowl staff.

Fernandez hopes to get into the journalism program at University of Missouri-Columbia. In a few years, we may even see him on ESPN.
