Wohlwend Elementary Students Wow Audience with Dance Acts

The annual Lip-Sync Competition featured students performing songs from movies and musicals in a Broadway-like setting complete with elaborate costumes.

Nearly 200 students from Wohlwend Elementary School rocked the house this weekend in the 2011 Lip-Sync Competition at Oakville High School.

More than 850 people attended the annual event, which was sponsored by the Wohlwend Mothers’ Club. In a Broadway-like setting complete with elaborate costumes, students showcased their dance talents by performing songs from hit movies and musicals.

Wendy and Mike Gicante said they were delighted to see their daughter Calynn, a third-grade student, perform “Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

“It’s a great money maker for the school, and it’s funny," Wendy Gicante said. "Very funny.”

Mike Gicante added that his daughter has performed in the show since kindergarten.

“It just gets better and better every year,” Mike Gicante said.

Students were able to choose from songs including “Eye of the Tiger” from the movie Rocky III, “Freak Out,” from the movie Toy Story 3 and “My New Philosophy” from the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Each act was highlighted with promotional posters that hung on the walls of the high school gym.

The show’s finale was performed by staff and teachers, who presented their rendition of Footloose. Renato Durante, a music teacher, and Wendy Brukner, a fourth-grade teacher, coordinated the finale.

They began practicing in early February to ensure that their finale would leave a lasting impression. Durante and Brukner expressed their enthusiasm with two eager thumbs up. “It’s such a fun show,” Durante said.

Mothers’ Club volunteers Michele Frisella and Kelly Huegerich coordinated the event, which culminated in a high-energy, captivating show with a total of 23 acts. The event raised $4,000 for the club, which donates the money to the school for technology, field trips, and cultural events.
