Oakville Boys Looking for First Win

Both Affton squads entered the week with four-game winning streaks.

The Affton boys and girls basketball teams entered action this week on a hot streak.

The Cougar boys have won four in a row including a pair of convincing victories last week in which they scored 154 points.

Affton defeated St. Pius 79-58 Tuesday as Sean Benedict scored 23 points. Reid Siebert added 16 while Halid Abera had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

It was a balanced attack Friday as five Cougars scored in double figures in a 75-36 win over Herculaneum. Kohl Siebert led the way in the win over the Blackcats with 16 points.

The Affton girls have matched the boys four-game winning streak with the help of Hali Ford who had 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight blocks, six assists and six steals in a 48-44 win over Rockwood Summit Thursday. Taylor Shinabarger also scored 16 against the Falcons.

The Gene Steighorst (Hillsboro) Boys Basketball Tournament ended with a pair of overtime games for area teams Saturday.

Lindbergh won its third place game against Francis Howell Central 67-59 behind an amazing shooting performance from Blake Welch. The Flyers had won their opening game of the tournament over Northwest 56-40 before falling in the semifinals to Festus 67-58. Welch and Mik Ebert each scored in double figures in those games.

Northwest needed an extra session to defeat Seckman 79-68 in the seventh place game Saturday. Christian Lamborn had a big game for the Lions with 28 points. The Lions had lost to Lindbergh and Windsor (63-56). Seckman was winless in the tournament falling to eventual champion De Soto (70-32) and Hillsboro (57-42) in addition to the overtime loss against Northwest.

The Oakville boys basketball team are still searching for their first win of the season after going winless in the tough Webster Groves Classic last week. The Tigers lost to Belvidere North (54-39), Miller Career Academy (58-45) and Maplewood (71-55). The host Statesmen won the tournament beating Lee's Summit North in the championship game Saturday.

Patrick Triplett had a big game Friday for Bayless in a 45-40 win over DuBourg. Triplett had 15 points, nine assists, six steals and seven rebounds.

The Oakville girls opened the 2011-12 season with a consolation championship in the Nerinx Hall Tournament. The Tigers lost their opener against Visitation (50-37) but rebounded with convincing wins against McCluer South-Berkeley (51-19) and University City (49-24). Turnovers were a problem for Oakville in the tournament. The Tigers turned the ball over at least 20 times in each of the three games including 28 against the Vivettes.

Cor Jesu advanced to the championship game at Nerinx before falling to the host Markers 67-60. The Chargers pounded Riverview Gardens 79-18 in the first round as 10 different players scored and then beat Parkway West 67-54 in the semifinals. Cor Jesu had fast starts in all three games, leading 44-6 at halftime against Riverview, 24-9 after the first quarter against Parkway West and 19-11 after the first quarter against Nerinx. The Chargers had the lead going into the fourth quarter in the championship game but were outscored 20-12 in the final eight minutes.

The Northwest and Seckman girls had an overtime game of their own last week with Northwest prevailing 51-49 on Tuesday as Brittany Fortner scored 24 points. Kori Farmer had 14 and Abby Hayden had 13 for the Jaguars. Those two players combined to make 13 of 15 free throws.

The Mehlville girls evened their record at 3-3 Thursday with a 36-30 win over McCluer North. The Panthers scored just 17 points in the first three quarters but exploded with a 19-point fourth quarter. Sierra Gray had 11 points to pace the Panthers.

WRESTLING

Area wrestling teams have found some success early in the 2011-12 season.

Rockwood Summit finished second in the 12-team Westminster Christian Academy Invitational (Timberland finished first).

Spenser Matthews (220 pounds) and Kris Bolton (heavyweight) won championships while Mitch Mays (152), Rudy May (182) and Austin LaPlant (195) had second place finishes.

Fox was third in the Ray Doney Invitational at Ritenour behind Jackson and McCluer North. Chandler Sykes (113) and Dominic Vitale (182) were individual champions for the Warriors.

Lindbergh had a pair of champions in the Parkway South Classic as Tom Korenak won at 132 points and Michael Slyman won at 160 pounds. The Flyers finished fifth as a team.

One of the highlights this week for several area teams in the GAC/Suburban South/West Conference Shootout which will be played at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

Rockwood Summit plays Fort Zumwalt East Thursday at 4 p.m. A pair of area teams play Friday as Mehlville plays St. Charles at 4 p.m. and Lindbergh meets Fort Zumwalt West at 5:30 p.m.

Four area teams play Saturday: Fox vs. Barat at 9 a.m.; Seckman vs. Warrenton, 10:30 a.m.; Northwest vs. Timberland, noon; and Oakville vs. St. Dominic, 3 p.m.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Affton basketball's Hali Ford continues her strong playing for the girls team. Ford had a couple stat stuffer games last week. She scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists, four blocks and three steals in a 58-49 win over Windsor Monday.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Lindbergh basketball's Blake Welch made seven of his 11 3-point attempts en route to a game-high 29 points.
