Sulya and Hoerr Race to Athlete of the Week

Affton's Cheyenne Hoerr wins four gold medals to pace Cougars to a second place finish in Class 3.

The weather was scorching, as were some performances by area athletes at last weekend's state track meet in Jefferson City.

Affton's Cheyenne Hoerr made her final high school meet a memorable one by winning four gold medals.

That helped the Cougars to a second place finish behind only University City in the Class 3 Meet.

Hoerr won the 100-meter hurdles in a photo finish against Kendra Perren of De Soto. Both were timed at 14.79.

Hoerr also won the 100-meter dash (12.11), the 200-meter dash (24.06) and the 300-meter hurdles (44.18).

And she was not the only Affton state champion. Fellow senior Hali Ford won the triple jump in convincing fashion. Her jump of 36 feet, 9.75 inches was over a foot farther than Bria Bartolotta of Sullivan, who finished second. Ford was also sixth in the long jump (16 feet, 3.75 inches).

Affton senior Kara Klemp finished tied for eighth in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet.

The Lutheran South girls also had an outstanding meet, finishing fifth as a team.

The highlight for the Lancers was a second place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. Junior Jasmine Cawley, senior Dana Kaempfe, junior Goka Meneh and freshman Maya Cody ran a 49.30. Cody also earned an individual medal, finishing sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.61).

Senior Amanda Behnke closed out her stellar high school career with the Lancers with a pair of third place finishes. She ran a 5:08.07 in the 1,600-meter run and an 11:37.84 in the 3,200-meter run.

The Lancers had another third place effort, as sophomore Jan Steinbrueck was third in the discus with a toss of 132-11.

The Lutheran South boys did not go away from Jefferson City empty-handed. Seniors Nadum Meneh and Travis Connelly each earned a pair of state medals. Meneh was third in the 400-meter run (48.49) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.51).

Connelly was fourth in the 3,200-meter run (9:41.40) and eighth in the 1,600-meter run (4:28.64).

Senior Sam Hoff was eighth in the 300-meter hurdles (40.89) for the Lancers.

Lindbergh senior Jill Harmon added a pair of state medals to her collection in her final high school meet. Harmon was fourth in the triple jump (38 feet, .25 inches) and sixth in the in the long jump (17 feet, 5.5 inches).

Oakville's Nekole Harvey capped off a superb junior season with a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.37).

A pair of Mehlville boys had third place finishes in the Class 4 meet. Senior Mike Sulya was third in the high jump (6-8) while junior Patrick Partee was third in the 300-meter hurdles (38.42).

The Lindbergh 4x800-meter relay team finished fourth. Juniors Kyle Pieper, Tyler Gloss, Tommy Skosky and Ronny Bass finished in 7:51.87.
