Area Baseball Players on Display at Elite Summer Tournament

The Greater Midwest Baseball Missouri-Illinois Bi-State Championships features many area baseball players.

Friday proved to be a not very fun day at the ballpark for several summer baseball teams from South County on day one of the Greater Midwest Baseball Missouri-Illinois Bi-State Championships at Founder’s Park.

The three teams, Warriors Gold, the Rawlings Tigers, and the St. Louis Captains, combined to go 1-5 on Friday, and were all knocked out of the winner’s bracket of the tournament, and will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

In fact, the only win among the three teams was a 10-3 victory for the Captains over fellow South County team, the Tigers.

“You definitely don’t anticipate getting beat twice in the same day,” Rawlings Tigers head coach Bryan Unger said. “We feel like we have a great shot to win every time we play. But we just didn’t make enough plays to get it done out here today.”

The loss to the Captains was Rawlings’ second of the day, after they were beaten 13-3 earlier in the day by the Rawlings Redbirds White team.

“That was a really uncharacteristic day for us,” Unger said. “We’re normally pretty tuned in, and don’t make so many errors and mental mistakes. But that’s the beauty of baseball, you get another chance (tomorrow).”

The one bright spot of the day for the Tigers was the play of Oakville sophomore-to-be Harrison Hawk, who had two hits and an RBI in game one, and two hits and two RBIs in game two.

“He’s a talented kid,” Unger said. “Works real hard, and a smart player too.”

Warriors Gold, who gets its players from Mehlville, Oakville, and Lindbergh High Schools, also lost twice on Friday, suffering a 13-1 loss to the Rawlings Prospects and a 10-2 loss against the Stallions Baseball  Club.

On Saturday, Warriors Gold will play the Rawlings Tigers in the first consolation bracket game of the day at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex (BMAC) in Bridgeton.

The St. Louis Captains, a group with players from Oakville and Northwest House Springs High, was sitting pretty after its early evening 10-3 win over the Rawlings Tigers.

But in the final game of the day on Friday, the Captains just couldn’t contain a potent Southern Illinois Bullets offense and lost 10-4.

“That was a decent win for us for sure (in game one),” Captains head coach Steve Rohr said. “We really executed well, and our pitcher really throw us a good ballgame.”

That game one hurler was Northwest sophomore-to-be Bradley Cornman, who held the Tigers in check for most of the contest, until he tired a bit and they got three runs off him in the final inning.

All told though, he pitched five innings and only allowed the three runs on six hits.

Offensively, the standouts were fellow sophomores-to-be Ryan Brewer of Northwest and Matt Havelka of Oakville.

Brewer had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored in the two games, while Havelka had three hits and two RBI as the Captains’ cleanup hitter.

The consolation championship game will serve as the opening game on Sunday, and will be at 10:30 a.m. at Shaw Park in Clayton.
