Bain's Cool Under Pressure Carries John Burroughs To Chaminade Tourney Title For Second Straight Year

Senior guard knocked down two huge shots in the final minute of regulation to bring Bombers back from seven points down, in eventual 50-46 overtime win over Pattonville.

CREVE COEUR -- With just over one minute left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament championship game against Pattonville, John Burroughs senior Trevor Bain had made just one shot.

He’d only taken two shots the entire game at that point, and had spent most of the night helping set up the Bomber offense, while also playing superb defense against the Pirates litany of ultra-quick guards.

But with his team down by seven points, and so close to possibly suffering their first loss of the season, Bain stepped up and knocked down two clutch long range shots that helped Burroughs force overtime.

Then with the game close again in OT, Bain made three pressure-packed free throws with less than 40 seconds left, that gave the Bombers their second straight Chaminade Tournament championship, and a 50-46 victory over Pattonville.

“It’s very nice,” Burroughs head coach Steve Wilcutt said. “And for a smaller school to come in here and win twice against these bigger schools, it’s difficult. It takes five basketball players to win a game. It’s not like football, where you have 11 guys out there, and sometimes smaller schools can compete with the bigger schools.”

Well they could, if they got clutch performances like the one Bain delivered on Saturday.

His back-to-back jumpers at the end of regulation helped end a near five-minute drought for the Bombers, who also got a terrific running layup from Jimmy Carney with 35 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 39.

In the extra session, it was JBS senior Foye Oluokun who took over the game -- scoring six of his team-high 15 points, along with 15 rebounds to lead the Bombers.

Bain finished with 11 points, while Ezekiel Elliott added 14 points for JBS as well.

Pattonville was led by senior Darren Davidson, who had a game-high 19 points, including a fast-break jam following a steal, that gave the Pirates their only lead of the overtime at 46-45.

Oluokun answered back quickly, with a sprawling layup that gave Burroughs the lead for good at 47-46.

JBS will now head into the new year with a sparking 10-0 record, with its next game scheduled for Friday, January 4, when the Bombers will host Jennings High, in a 7 p.m. contest at historic Olin Gymnasium.

Pattonville, which is 7-2 on the season, will also play that same evening, with a 7 p.m. matchup against Whitfield.
