Fit For Fun

St. Louis County seniors and residents who are “young at heart” are invited to join County Executive Charlie Dooley on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 8:30 a.m., at Creve Coeur Park, to kick off the County’s latest fitness initiative, “Fit for Fun.” This event will happen several times throughout the area and will be at Jefferson Barracks June 15.

“Fit for Fun” is a collaborative effort between BJC HealthCare, Oasis, St. Louis Senior Olympics and St. Louis County. The program consists of five walks scheduled between the months of May and September. Each walk will be held in a different County park with Creve Coeur Park being the first venue. Seniors are encouraged to walk, run or bike the one mile course. Leashed friends are also welcome to accompany their owners on the walks.

Registration for each event begins at 8:00 a.m., with the walk commencing at 9:00 a.m. Following the walks, entertainment and light refreshments will be provided. There is no charge to participate in the “Fit for Fun” events.

“The idea for this initiative began with a discussion I had with County Executive Charlie Dooley about the importance of seniors remaining fit and active. My experience as one of the founders of the St. Louis Senior Olympics and the national Senior Olympics taught me that there are a large number of seniors who are interested in getting fit, but shy away from competition,” stated “Fit for Fun” founder Harris Frank. “In addition, this same group enjoys socializing as part of a fitness regime. “Fit for Fun” meets the needs of seniors wanting a fun, easy exercise program that involves meeting new people,” commented Frank.

The dates of the five “Fit for Fun” events and the County Parks featured are listed below.

May 18, 2011 Creve Coeur Park – Tremayne Shelter
June 15, 2011 Jefferson Barracks Park- Blackhawk Shelter
July 20, 2011 Belle Fontaine Park- Belle Fontaine Shelter
August 17, 2011 Clydesdale Park – Lawrence Hensler Shelter
September 21, 2011 Spanish Lake Park – James O’Mara Shelter

“St. Louis County is proud to host and co-sponsor the “Fit for Fun” initiative,” said Dooley. “Although participation in the events is targeted at County older residents, everyone is welcome to take part in one or all five of the fun walks. With the events being held in various parks throughout St. Louis County, residents can easily participate in the new fitness initiative.”
