Lindbergh Sweeps Mehlville in Baseball

Also, Oakville volleyball goes 3-for-4 last week.

The Lindbergh baseball team was down to its last out Wednesday against Mehlville.

The Panthers had a 1-0 lead as the Flyers had runners on first and third with two outs.

"(Mehlville pitcher Austin) Simokaitis was throwing real well," Lindbergh coach Darin Scott said. "We had the hit the ball hard a few times but they made the plays."

Lindbergh needed something special from Ryan Woodland. The Flyers executed the double steal with the speedy Woodland coming home from third base.

"We needed a spark and we got it from Ryan," Scott said. "He is a track guy who does a lot of pinch running and courtesy running for us. He has some good baseball instincts and got a good jump and scored easily."

It was the 12th stolen base of the season for Woodland in 11 games.

That prolonged the game and Matt Feldt won it with an RBI double in the eighth inning. Jesse Maness pitched the first seven innings for the Flyers with Bryce Parrott nailing it down with a scoreless eighth inning.

as Feldt went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

The senior was seeing his first action of the season and he made the most of it. His first game came Monday in an 18-5 trouncing of Parkway North. Feldt was 3-for-3 with five RBI as the Flyers scored 12 times in the first inning.

He also had the lone RBI in a 7-1 loss to Eureka Friday. For the week, Feldt was 9-for-13 with four doubles, a triple, six runs scored and seven RBI.

Affton broke a four-game losing streak Wednesday with a 12-1 win over Bayless. Zach Fiebig had a home run and four RBI for the Cougars. Anthony Herron was the winning pitcher and had two doubles against the Bronchos. Herron had a double, home run and three RBI in a 10-6 loss to Windsor Tuesday.

Oakville lost both games in its series against Marquette. The Mustangs won 6-3 Tuesday. C.J. Martin had two of the Tigers' four hits, both doubles. Marquette followed with a 6-2 win Wednesday. Tommy Breunig has a double and RBI for the Tigers.

Volleyball

The Affton volleyball team had a great showing in the Rockwood Summit Tournament Saturday. The Cougars split a pool play match with O'Fallon but beat Bayless, Fort Zumwalt North and Belleville East. They closed it out with a win over O’Fallon as Josh Comer led the way with 14 kills. The score of the championship match against O'Fallon was 26-24, 25-22. Affton is now 13-4-1. 

Oakville won three of four during the week. The Tigers beat Parkway South, Francis Howell North and Fox and lost to Lafayette.

Lindbergh split four matches at a tournament at Parkway Central Saturday. The Flyers beat Kirkwood and University City and lost to Marquette and SLUH.

Mehlville went 2-2 during the week with wins over Summit and Fox and losses against Marquette and De Smet.

Soccer

Scoring was at a premium for area soccer teams last week. Lindbergh lost a pair of 1-0 games, falling to Marquette Tuesday and Oakville Thursday.

Lexi Pommer's goal for the Tigers was their only one of the week as they had lost to Lafayette 1-0 Tuesday.

Mehlville played just once, falling to Parkway West 3-0 Tuesday.

Affton gave up 15 goals without scoring in losses to Rosati-Kain and DuBourg. The Cougars did bounce back to beat Jennings 5-0 Wednesday. Haley Stewart had three goals for Affton.
