Mehlville Volleyball Pushes Through First Round of Districts

The Panthers defeated the Eureka Wildcats in three games Saturday morning.

Last Monday evening the Eureka boy’s volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Mehlville Panthers in Suburban West Conference action. When the Panthers hooked up with the Wildcats in round robin play of the Class 4, District 2 tournament at Saint Louis University High School, they had something to prove.

The Wildcats did just that as they took Mehlville the distance in a 25-22, 20-25, 15-13 loss to the Panthers last Saturday afternoon.

“Mehlville is fundamentally as good of a team as anyone in the area,” Eureka head coach Greg Curran said. “It was a good match and it came down to the last couple of points and we gave ourselves a chance to win and their big players came up and probably made the difference for them.”

The win for Mehlville marked the Panthers’ sixth straight win in just 12 days.

“Eureka played us really tough,” said Mehlville head coach Dennis Perry. “On Monday night they didn’t play quite as good defense, but they were missing their starting libero. But they came out today and were getting touches on just about every swing we tried to take. We were fortunate to be able to hold on against them.”

Mehlville senior outside hitter Brian Beczkala was really impressed with the fact that the Panthers battled their way back to win the third game against the Wildcats.

“I thought that we did a great job in that third game,” Beczkala said. “It was a close game and we pulled through."

Eureka senior middle hitter Tyler Casey also thought that the Wildcats played much better on Saturday afternoon than their Monday evening performance at Mehlville.

“We actually played really well compared to the last time we played them,” Casey said. “We didn’t really block that well on defense, but we did what we could and I thought that we fought hard."
