Oakville Basketball Teams Begin District Play This Week

Oakville is the second seed in the Class 5 District 6 Tournament hosted by Lindbergh.

Class 5 Boys Preview

The Metro Catholic Conference was the most dominant in the area throughout the regular season.

The league featured the area's best team, undefeated Chaminade (24-0), and the best player, Red Devils senior standout Bradley Beal (32.5 points per game).

But, the league was far from just a one-team conference. The top four teams in the MCC have a combined record of 78-23 entering district play, and half of those losses came to other conference teams.

Even St. Louis University High, which did not win a league game, had a 9-9 record in non-conference games.

It should come as no surprise that three of the five teams in the MCC (Chaminade, Vianney and De Smet) received top seeds in Class 5 district tournaments, which will be played throughout the area this week.

Chaminade is the top seed in the Class 5 District 3 Tournament at Webster Groves and Vianney is No. 1 at the District 6 Tournament at Lindbergh.

De Smet, which has 20 wins, is the top seed in the District 5 Tournament, which it is hosting. Hazelwood West is a dangerous No. 2 seed at De Smet with a 17-8 record. One of its losses was a 58-56 loss to Hazelwood Central on Jan. 13.

Hazelwood Central is the top seed in District 2 with a 25-1 overall record. The only loss for the Suburban North Conference champions came against an MCC school as it lost to CBC. McCluer and McCluer North are seeded second and third, respectively in District 2. McCluer, which is 18-9, lost to Hazelwood Central 65-61 on Jan. 6 while McCluer North, which is 22-4, fell to the Hawks 81-63 on Feb. 7.

Holt and Troy played the regular season finale for each team on Friday, as Holt won 37-34. They are the top seeds in the District 7 Tournament at Troy. Holt is the top seed with an 18-4 record while Troy is 16-10. Each team is 5-1 in the GAC South Conference and will be in action on Wednesday.

The District 8 Tournament at Fort Zumwalt East could be a wide-open one with all of the teams having double digit losses. Fort Zumwalt South is the top seed at 15-10. The Bulldogs will play Francis Howell North (11-13) on Wednesday at 5:30 at Fort Zumwalt East, while Fort Zumwalt North (18-6) plays Francis Howell Central (12-13) at 7 p.m.

Elsewhere, Parkway South (20-5) and Lafayette had a huge boys basketball game last Friday night, with Lafayette (18-7) winning, 60-53. The win gave Lafayette a share of the Suburban West Conference with Oakville with each at 7-1, while Parkway South finished 6-2 in the league.

Lafayette and Parkway South (20-5) could very well have a rematch in the district tournament with even bigger implications. Parkway South is the top seed while Lafayette is seeded second in the Class 5 District 4 Tournament which is hosted by Lafayette. Parkway South defeated Lafayette 53-39 on Jan. 25.

District tournaments are being played throughout the state this week with championship games for the two area Class 5 districts, for both boys and girls, scheduled for Friday night.

Oakville is the second seed in the Class 5 District 6 Tournament which is hosted by Lindbergh. The Tigers have a 16-10 overall record, Top-seeded Vianney is 15-11, and plays in the powerful Metro Catholic Conference. Three of the five teams from the MCC (undefeated Chaminade, DeSmet and Vianney) have No. 1 seeds and CBC could well have another if it did not play in the same district as Chaminade.

Championship games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

CLASS 5 GIRLS PREVIEW

Incarnate Word Academy begins defense of its Class 5 championship while Fort Zumwalt West looks for its second consecutive Final Four appearance as high school basketball's postseason for area Class 5 teams begins this week.

The tournaments begin Monday and Tuesday with championship games scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday depending on the district.

Incarnate Word will be a heavy favorite in the Class 5 Tournament, which is hosted by De Smet. The Red Knights are 21-4, and 4-1 playing in the strong MWAA White Division. Hazelwood West, which is 14-9, is seeded second.

Zumwalt West is the top seed at District 7, which will be played at Troy. The Jaguars were GAC South Division champions and are 22-4 overall, although they suffered a 70-44 loss to St. Joseph's Academy on Tuesday. Troy, which is the second seed, is 16-9 and lost by 20 points to Zumwalt West on Feb. 8.

Hazelwood Central (20-5) and Francis Howell Central (19-7) are the other top seeds in area Class 5 tournaments.

Hazelwood Central, which went 7-0 in the Suburban North Conference, is the top seed in District 2 which it is hosting. McCluer North (18-8) is the second seed. Hazelwood Central defeated McCluer North 45-29 on Feb. 8, which determined the conference champion.

Howell Central and Fort Zumwalt South (19-5) are the top seeds in the District 8 Tournament at Fort Zumwalt East. This could be one of the more interesting championship games if the seeds hold to form as the two teams have similar records and have not played each other.

Meanwhile, Eureka and Cor Jesu have the top seeds in what look like very competitive district tournaments.

Eureka and Lafayette tied for first place in the Suburban West with 7-1 marks and are the top two seeds at Lafayette. Eureka defeated Lafayette 37-34 early in the season on Dec. 7.

Cor Jesu, Kirkwood and Lindbergh are all teams that are capable of making some noise in the postseason. Cor Jesu is 20-6, which includes a 40-36 win over second-seeded Kirkwood in the Visitation Tournament on Dec. 26. Kirkwood won the Suburban South Conference and is 18-8.
