Athlete of the Week: Oakville's Fussell vs. Affton Pitcher vs. Mehlville Catcher

A couple of familiar foes stepped on the field Thursday night at the Anheuser-Busch Center for the championship game of the Joe Carenza-CYC Soccer Tournament.

And this time it was Oakville that came home with the championship trophy (for the second time in the last four years). The Tigers defeated Lindbergh 3-2. The two teams had played earlier in the season with Oakville coming out on top 1-0.

"It was a typical Oakville-Lindbergh game," Tiger coach Dave Robben said. "Those games are always hotly-contested and this one was back-and-forth."

The Tigers led three different times in the game, the final time after Ashley Burton broke a 2-2 tie with a goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.

"We played well throughout the tournament," Robben said. "The Webster game went into overtime and the Collinsville game was very physical. The goal scoring was spread out with Abby Ullo, Nicole Mard and Ashley Burton scoring two goals each. Lauren Fussell had five assists, most coming off corners or set pieces."

Mard scored in the first three minutes of the opener Monday against Webster and then won it 2-1 for the Tigers with a goal in the second overtime.

Ullo's penalty kick was the game-winner in the 2-1 triumph over Collinsville.

The balanced scoring was a key for the Tigers, who are currently without Chloe Hutcheson with a broken bone in her foot.

Lindbergh had advanced to the championship game with a pair of shutouts. The Flyers beat Rosati-Kain 1-0 Tuesday and then defeated Althoff 3-0 Wednesday.

Mehlville won three games in the Lutheran South Tournament after losing its opener 3-0 to St. Pius Monday. Claire Steward had eight saves in a 2-0 win over De Soto Tuesday. Lauren Guerrero had a pair of goals in a 7-1 win over Affton Wednesday. The Panthers scored three unanswered goals in a 4-2 come-from-behind win Friday over De Soto in the consolation championship. Shelby Gibson led the way with a pair of goals.

Affton went 2-2 in the Lutheran South Tournament. Haley Stewart had a goal and two assists in a 4-0 win over DuBourg and scored twice in a 3-1 win over Lutheran South Friday. The Cougars lost convincingly in the other two games, falling to St. Pius 6-0 and Mehlville 7-1.

Baseball

A no-hitter by Affton's Joey Thompson highlighted the week in baseball for area teams. Thompson struck out 12 in five innings in a 16-0 win over Normandy Wednesday in the five-inning game. Anthony Herron led the potent Cougar offense with a pair of triples and four RBI.

Mehlville went 2-3 on the week, which included a big 6-4 win over Lafayette Tuesday. Austin Kretzer had a home run and three RBI for the Panthers against the Lancers.

It was a tough week on the diamond for Lindbergh and Oakville. Each lost all four games. Lindbergh lost twice to Marquette (8-4 and 11-5) and also fell to Francis Howell (7-3) and Eureka (8-1). Oakville scored just seven runs in its four losses. The Tigers lost twice to both Fox (5-0 and 3-2) and Parkway South (3-1 and 10-4).

Golf

Lindbergh finished third among 10 teams in the Class 4 District 1 Golf Tournament at Aberdeen. The Flyers advanced four golfers to the sectional tournament. Satchel Conroy and Justin Stacer were tied for third with scores of 78 (six-over par). Drew Ervin (82) and Andrew Jang (83) also advanced for the Flyers.

Mehlville and Oakville each got one golfer to sectionals. Mehlville's Kyle Segobiano advanced with an 81 while Oakville's Cam Crouthers shot an 82. Oakville finished sixth as a team while Mehlville was ninth.

Affton finished eighth out of nine teams in the rugged Class 3, District 3 Tournament at Forest Park and did not qualify any golfer to sectional. Joseph Dahlia had the best Cougar round, shooting a 90.

Athlete of the Week

Congratulations to Lindbergh baseball's Jordan Harmon, who had more than 1,700 votes in our Athlete of the Week poll. He beat out Oakville's Alex Bergman and Affton's Haley Stewart. The Flyer pitcher threw a one-hit gem against Oakville last week and did not walk a batter while striking out five.
