Oakville Falls in Postseason

The Tigers were out-manned and out-gunned against the Jr. Bills.

In Friday’s first-round Class 6 football playoff match-up between and SLUH, both teams showed why they got into the postseason. SLUH just showed it more.

Though the Tigers fought off a running clock, the game was never close. The Jr. Bills defeated Oakville 57-27 at SLUH to advance to the next round, and end the Tiger’s season with a 5-6 record.

“We gave up some big plays on defense that we really didn’t give our selves a chance with,” Oakville head coach Arlee Conners said. “We drive the ball for three minutes, and they get the ball and score in 30 seconds.”

The coach doesn’t exaggerate. SLUH senior Terek Hawkins bobbed and weaved, and streaked 94 yards for the first Bills touchdown three plays into the game. The Tigers took their turn, drove 50 yards, and finished the possession with a blocked field goal attempt by senior Andrew Bick.

The Bills received, and two plays later Hawkins struck again. This time with a 47-yard touchdown run. He finished with 216 yards in 17 carries. Two more touchdown runs in the first half made a total of four for the senior in the game.

Junior, Moe LeGrand led the Oakville rushers with 114 yards in 22 carries. Teammate and classmate, Derrick Brown had 39 yards on seven carries.

Tigers senior receiver, Javon Henderson had two receptions for 79 yards. By comparison, SLUH senior, Camerson Stubbs broke the school record with 247 yards in seven catches, two of which were touchdowns.

Oakville’s sophomore quarterback, Andy Oliver completed 10 out of 16 passes for 167 total yards. SLUH senior Trevor McDonagh was 15 for 19 for 396 total yards passed, two being the touchdown passes to Stubbs.

Oakville scored on their second possession with a 12-yard LeGrand run, though the point-after kick was blocked. The Tigers scored twice more in the first half, making it 36-21, for the Jr. Bills, at the half.

The final Tigers touchdown came in the third quarter on a 29-yard Oliver run. Oliver rushed for 74 yards in 21 carries, unfortunately, that total figures in the yards lost in the 10 times he was sacked.

“We had some opportunities in the first half,” Conners said. “Had we gotten that game a little closer, made a couple stops, one or two, it would have been definitely different, but, you don’t get them back.

“I was proud of what they did out here. We got a lot of good things we can build on,” Conners said.

SLUH will go on to play De Smet, which beat Eureka 35-28, in the state quaterfinal.
