Cor Jesu and Oakville Compete for Athlete of the Week

The two face off again after Cor Jesu won the Class 3, District 8 title 1-0 with an overtime goal by Erin McGauley.

It was probably the shot of Cor Jesu senior Erin McGauley's life.

Her goal off a free kick in overtime proved to be a sudden victory for the Chargers and sudden death for Oakville. Cor Jesu improved to 19-2 for the season with hopes of a state title still alive. Oakville finishes the 2012 campaign with an 18-5 mark.

"It was just an extraordinary shot," Oakville coach Dave Robben said of McGauley's goal, which was the only one in the title game. "We had a wall in place and she was able to elevate it well above the wall. She had enough control of the ball to bend it to the corner. Tina (Haberberger) did everything she could. It was just a great goal."

The shot ended a classic game and another very good season for the Tigers, who had reached the finals as Ashley Burton and Lexi Pommer scored in the final five minutes of the first half in a 2-1 semifinal victory over Rockwood Summit.

"I was proud of the way they played in both games," Robben said. "We stuck with it after we got behind against Summit and we defended well with the lead in the second half against a creative Summit attack."

Oakville stayed with the top-seeded Chargers throughout the championship game.

"The bottom line is that it was a back-and-forth game," Robben said. "Both goalkeepers played well. Tina kept us in the game several times."

The Tigers had one of the best chances of the game on a brilliant individual effort by back Gabby Korte.

"She got the ball deep in our end and went all the way into the penalty area, beating several defenders," Robben said. "Just as she was about to strike the ball, the ball took a little bounce up."

That may have been the difference as Korte's shot hit the cross bar.

"The bounce of the ball, the roll of the ball is all part of the game," Robben said. "That chance stood out but we also had other chances in the game."

It was a sudden end to the season and the careers of senior standouts Burton and Lauren Fussell, who have been selected to play in the annual all-star game on June 30.

Baseball

The season is over for all area baseball teams after Mehlville and Affton were eliminated in district tournaments.

Mehlville had a 4-1 lead early in the Class 4 District 2 semifinals against Festus. But the Tigers, who were the top seed and eventual district champion, came back to win 7-5.

Affton had its second shutout in the Class 2, District 3 Tournament when it blanked Hancock 2-0 in the semifinals. But the Cougars were no match for top-seeded Lutheran South in the title game. The Lancers needed just five innings to win 11-1.

Track and Field

It was a terrific day on the track for Cheyenne Hoerr and the Affton girls. Hoerr qualified to next weekend's Class 3 state meet in four events as she won three events in the Class 3, Sectional 1 Meet at Ste. Genevieve. Hoerr won the 100-hurdles, 300-hurdles and 200-meter dash and finished third in the 100-meter dash (the top four sectional finishers qualify for state).

Hoerr's effort helped Affton to a team sectional championship. She will be joined in Jefferson City by Hali Ford, who finished third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump, and by Kara Klemp, who was third in the pole vault.

Lindbergh's Jill Harmon will be competing in the long jump and triple jump at state after an impressive showing at the Class 4, Sectional 1 Meet in Poplar Bluff. Harmon won the triple jump and was second in the long jump. The Flyers actually finished one-two in the triple jump as Jordan Yanker was second.

Oakville's Nekole Harvey was the other area state qualifier after finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Mehlville, Lindbergh and Oakville all will have boys represented at the state meet. Mehlville finished second in the 4x200-meter dash. Patrick Partee was second in the 300-meter hurdles and Mike Sulya was fourth in the high jump.

Lindbergh also qualifies a relay team and individual. The 4x800-meter relay team was third and Sebastiano Ferko was third in the long jump.

Oakville's Elvir Sarajlic advances to state after a close second place finish in the 1,600-meter run.

Athlete of the Week: Congratulations to Mehlville track's Patrick Partee for being voted out of three track stand-outs. Here are this week's nominees:
