Oakville Heads North to Look for Win Number Three

The Tigers, who are coming off a 34-17 win over Mehlville, travel to St. Charles County to take on Francis Howell North Friday night.

Any football coach on any level would gladly take 368 yards rushing and an average of 9.9 yards per rush in a game.

That would almost always be a recipe for success. But that was not the case last year for the Oakville football team in its game against Francis Howell North.

Darrion Moore rushed for 244 yards on 22 carries, and Javon Henderson added 99 yards on the ground on just eight rushes. The team rushed for 368 yards and still came up 21 points short in a 40-19 loss.

"We found a lot of ways to lose games last year, and a lot of goofy stuff happened in that game," Tigers coach Arlee Conners said. "We moved the ball well, but we got into the red zone a few times and turned it over."

Oakville comes off a stellar effort in a 34-17 victory over rival Mehlville.

Sophomore Andy Oliver had a breakout game as he completed eight of 17 passes for 225 yards. Javon Henderson caught four of the passes for 84 yards and also added 101 yards on the ground in six tries. Jaron Henderson caught just two passes, which went for 110 yards.

"We had everybody back last week and that was the best game we have played," Conners said. "That is the team we plan on seeing the rest of the way."

A similar game Friday should result in the third win for the Tigers and a winning record.

Francis Howell North was torched in its first two games, giving up 114 points in losses to Timberland (62-34) and Fort Zumwalt West (52-0). The Knights were completely dominated by Zumwalt West as the score would indicate. The Jaguars amassed over 500 yards of total offense while the Knights had less than 100.

Howell North has played better the last two weeks. It defeated Fort Zumwalt East 24-23 as Terron Givans scored on a 65-yard run with 1:30 left in the game.

The Knights fell last week to Fort Zumwalt South 21-7 in a game in which they trailed 21-0 at halftime.

Givans has been the one constant offensive threat for Howell North. He rushed for 244 yards against Timberland, 184 against Fort Zumwalt East and 157 against Fort Zumwalt South.

"He's not the biggest guy and not the fastest guy," Conners said of Givans. "But he has a lot of confidence now and runs real hard. They really depend on him. We need to swarm on defense and wrap him up."
