Week in Sports: Oakville Netters Defeat Mehlville

Lindbergh baseball also has a big week.

Depth has been a strength for the 2012 Oakville boys tennis team.

Tiger coach Linda Gebauer was confident that her team would do well at the bottom half of their order in Wednesday's rivalry match against Mehlville.

The Tigers did sweep the bottom matches but also did well at the top of the lineup in an 8-1 victory. Oakville improved to 5-4 for the season.

"We have been competing well all season," Gebauer said. "Two of our losses have come by 4-3 scores. We used a 6-3 district format against Mehlville and knew they would be good in that format with players able to double back. Mehlville has a couple of pretty strong players at the top of the lineup and we knew those matches would be critical."

Oakville senior Alex Bergman won the match of the day at No. 1 singles as he beat Blake Penberthy 6-1, 5-7 (14-12). A super tie-breaker was used for the third set.
