Panther Volleyball Falls to Flyer Defense

The Panthers lost in two games at Lindbergh Tuesday.

Despite a late comeback, the Panther volleyball team fell to the Flyers 25-7 and 25-23 at Lindbergh.

After taking an early 16-6 lead in the first game, the Flyers ran with the score. The game ended on a Mehlville missed serve.

"We just play really good defense," said Lindbergh coach Johnna Wieter. "We're a little team, so that's what we have to do."

The Flyer offense was led by Kaitlin Schwent, whose hits from the outside caused Mehlville's defense to falter.

"We moved and were in position, we just weren't getting the passes down," said Mehlville coach Susan Hurt.

Mehlville also had two girls who were not 100 percent healthy for the game. Setter Karlye Jones and right side hitter Amy Nguyen both suffered from leg and ankle injuries.

"They played tonight and did well, but were not at their best," Hurt said. "If you're a horse trying to run a race with a bad leg, you're not going to go far."

In the second game, Lindbergh made some changes to the line-up, including their libero and hitters.

Mehlville started with a 3-0 lead and kept it close the entire game. With a four-point lead, Lindbergh's Allison Krus ran across the court for an amazing save that swung the momentum for the Flyers. A kill from the outside ended the second game 25-23.

"When you're on you're on, when you're not, you're not, it's a game of momentum," Hurt said.

The Panthers play at home again Wednesday as they take on Northwest at 5:15 p.m.
