Suburban West Conference Finishes Spring Sports Season

Patch takes a look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban West Conference, including wrapping up the spring sports postseason:

Tennis
Lafayette tennis finished second as a team and had a doubles team which finished third at the state Tennis Championships at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, MO. The Lancers had an exciting 5-4 win over Parkway Central in the team semifinals last Thursday, but then fell to Rock Bridge 5-2 in the finals.

Mick Lyons and Jake Goodman finished third in doubles. They had a tough semifinal loss to Joe LaRose and James Hunter of Rock Bridge when they were two points away from winning. But the Lancers duo closed out their high school careers in style with a straight set win over Robert Conroy and Josh Waite in the third-place match.

Mehlville's Jeremy Sellmeyer was the only other Suburban West Conference individual to play at state. The Panthers senior had a tough draw as he lost to Parkway Central's Michael Davis 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and was then eliminated by Dylan Steffens of Rockwood Summit, 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation bracket.

Track and Field
Several conference athletes came home with medals from the Class 4 Track and Field Meet, which was held last Friday and Saturday at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. . 

The boys meet was highlighted by a state championship by Chris Caldwell of Lafayette. Caldwell won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27. 

The Suburban West actually finished one-two in the 110-meter hurdles as Taron Street of Marquette was second to Caldwell. Street had an outstanding meet as he was also third in the 300-meter hurdles. 

Fox's Zach English and Kirkwood's Quincy Sharp also came home with a pair of individual medals. English was third in the long jump and seventh in the high jump while Sharp was sixth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100. Sharp also teamed with Rashid Pullem, Charvae Roddy and Eric McWoods to finish sixth in the 4x200-meter relay.

No conference team finished in the top 10 overall, although three finished in the top 20. Marquette was 12th with 18 points. Street led the way with his effort in the hurdles. Jeff Orf was seventh in the 800-meter run and Noan Kauppila was seventh in the 3200-meter run.

Tim Hamm-Bey helped Lindbergh to a 15th-place finish. Tim Hamm-Bey had three medals. He was fifth in the open 200-meter dash and was part of two medal-winning relay teams. He teamed with Ryan Woodland, Marc Lewis and Adam Schremp to finish second in the 4x200 and fourth in the 4x100-meter relays.

Eureka's Deonco Williams had an individual and relay medal. Williams was eighth in the triple jump. Williams, Ryan Coll, Matt Hentges and Tyler Jordan were fourth in the 4x400-meter relay.

Fox had a medal-winning relay team as Sendin Bajric, Keenen Hindes, Larry Lopez and Tyler Holmes finished sixth in the 4x800-meter relay.

Dominique Jenkins was the lone Parkway South boy to win a medal. He was seventh in the triple jump.

A pair of Suburban West Conference girls teams finished in the top 10 at state. Lindbergh was sixth and Eureka was seventh.

The highlight for Lindbergh was its state championship in the 4x800-meter relay. Sarah McCaughey, Marina White, Grace Watt and Colleen Riley won with a time of 9:14.19. Those same four girls also finished third in the 4x400-meter relay. Riley also finished fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 1600-meter run, thus coming home with four state medals. Jill Harmon and Katie Kennedy were the other individual Lindbergh medalists. Harmon was fifth in the triple jump while Kennedy was seventh in the pole vault.

All four Eureka relay teams won medals at state. The Wildcats were third in the 4x200 (Paige Biles, Alana Hester, Laura King and Jill Rechtein) and the 4x800 (Rechtein, Jessie McNeel, Taylor Schulz and Alyssa Rebecca). Eureka was fifth in the 4x100 (Biles, Hester, King and Katie Grimshaw) and sixth in the 4x400 (McNeel, Rebecca, Rechtein and Eilish Overby).

Rebecca and Megan Cidlik also won individual medals. Rebecca was third in the 800-meter run and Cidlik was eighth in the discus.

A pair of Northwest girls won medals in field events. Jennifer Sturgeon was fifth in the pole vault and Taylor Hosna was eighth in the long jump.

Fox had a state medalist as Shawntanay Johnson was fifth in the 100.

Baseball
Eureka was the only conference team to win a district baseball championship, but the postseason ended in the sectionals on Tuesday for the Wildcats as they fell to Vianney, 9-3. Eureka finished with a 17-10 record.

Patch Suburban West Boys Athlete of the Week

The Class 4 state Track and Field Championships featured several stellar performances, but it was Lafayette junior Chris Caldwell who stood out the most from the Suburban West. Caldwell won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27, and also ran a leg in the 4x40-meter relay team which finished fifth. Caldwell's state title helped Lafayette to a 16th-place finish as a team.

Patch Suburban West Girls Athlete of the Week

Lindbergh senior Colleen Riley ended her prep track and field career with a flourish. She was part of the Flyers’ state championship in the 4x800-meter relay. Riley also teamed with the same trip for  a third-place finish in the 4x400. Individually, Riley placed fourth in the 800 and also fifth in the 1600-meter run to bring her total medal count to four.
