Mehlville and Oakville Play Tight Games in Winter Tournaments

Rockwood Summit wins the Seckman Tournament while the Affton Cougars capture their own invitational.

The Mehlville boys only won one of its three games in the Chaminade Tournament but probably played its best basketball of the young season.

The Panthers fell to eventual champion John Burroughs 63-57 and then lost in overtime to Parkway Central 54-53 before recording a 55-46 win over Bayless in the fifth place game.

Mehlville had four players score in double figures in both the Parkway Central and Bayless games and had three in double figures against John Burroughs. Mehlville converted seven of 14 3-pointers and 20 of 25 free throws in the win against the Bronchos as Cameron Stoner led the way with 15 points.

The Mehlville girls finished 1-2 in the Rockwood Summit Tournament although Sierra Gray broke loose offensively. Gray scored 22 points in a win against De Soto and added 18 in a three-point loss to Francis Howell North.

The Rockwood Summit and Affton boys basketball teams celebrated their holidays on the court with tournament championships. And both did so in impressive fashion.

Summit captured the title in the Seckman Tournament. The Falcons trailed at halftime in the championship game against Lutheran South but scored 42 second half points en route to a 70-61 victory. 

The Falcons had breezed through their first two games of the tournament. They scored 34 points in the first quarter and 54 in the first half in an 86-29 romp of the host Jaguars. They followed that with a 53-30 win over Windsor in the semifinals.

Northwest finished sixth among the eight teams in the tournament, falling in the consolation championship to Francis Howell North 69-56.

Fox edged Seckman 38-36 in the seventh place game.

Affton scored over 60 points in each of its three games in winning its tournament. The Cougars started slowly and trailed at halftime in their first round game against Crossroads before rebounding in the second half for a 62-51 win as Reid Siebert had 17 points. John Brannan had 17 in a 67-62 semifinal victory over Valley Park. Siebert led a well-balanced attack in a 68-52 win in the championship game against St. Pius. Affton came out of the blocks strong in the title game with 46 first half points.

The host Falcon girls had an interesting tournament. They scored 57 points in their first round game against Fort Zumwalt South but then scored a combined 52 points in their next two games.

Cor Jesu was 6-1 entering the second week of the Visitation Tournament. But the Chargers lost their final three games of the tourney falling to St. Joseph's Academy (66-31), Visitation (40-34) and Principia (60-54). Monica Simon made all eight of her free throws and scored 15 in the loss to Principia.

It was two and out for the Oakville girls in the MICDS Tournament. The Tigers lost a pair of tight games falling to Parkway Central 39-35 and to Clayton in overtime 39-36.

Affton won two of its three games in the Hancock Tournament. The Cougars lost to eventual champion Ladue 49-38 in the first round but then beat Hancock 57-12 and Ritenour 52-47. Hali Ford scored 17 in the championship game against the Huskies. That was a comeback win as the Cougars outscored Ritenour 21-9 in the fourth quarter.

The Northwest girls advanced to the championship game in the Seckman Tournament but were handled in that one by Pacific 67-39. The Lions outscored Festus 24-2 in the first quarter in a 42-29 first round victory and then beat St. Clair 38-35 in the semifinals.

Abby Hayden had a pair of big games for Seckman, which won the consolation championship. Hayden had 18 in a 56-52 overtime win over Hillsboro and then had 17 in a 45-24 win over Fox in the consolation championship.

Lindbergh finished fourth. The Flyers opened with a 41-31 win over Seckman but struggled offensively in losses to Pacific (51-32) and St. Clair (52-28).

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Falcon Kaitlyn Brame had an outstanding shooting game against the Bulldogs. She missed just one of six 3-point attempts, finishing with 29 points.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Fellow Falcon Jory Woodson led the way against Lutheran South in the championship with 21 points.
