Thibodeaux Scores Two in Mehlville Soccer Victory

The Panthers defeated the Northwest Lions Tuesday at home.

The Mehlville Panthers earned their fourth straight win as senior Haylee Thibodeaux scored two goals in the second half against the Northwest Lions Tuesday .

Not only was it her first two-goal game of the season, it was the first time the senior scored by kicking, rather than heading the ball in.

“It takes a senior like Haylee in games like that to step up and score two goals, to put you on her back and propel the team to a win,” said Coach Tom Harper.

Fellow senior Claire Steward was in goal for the victory, making it her fourth shutout in six wins.

“With Claire back there, she’s going to give us the big save when we need it, when the game is on the line,” Harper said. “When she’s in the line-up, Mehlville has a chance to win.”

Despite the win, Harper said the team could have done better and is starting to come together as a team.

“Even when we don’t play at our best and we can still win, that’s a good sign for us,” he said. “To win this one in conference is big, it’s a boost of confidence for them knowing the district that they’re going into.”

The Panthers have a tough road ahead being in a district with No. 1-ranked Cor Jesu along with top 10 teams Oakville and Rockwood Summit.

But the team is focused on finishing strong; if they win the last four games, including Senior Night Friday at 6 p.m., they’ll finish with a winning record.

Thibodeaux, who is attending Southwest Baptist University in the fall, said her last games would be bittersweet.

“I’m ready to play college soccer, but I don’t want to leave this team, they’re like my second family,” she said.
