Three Area Cross Country Runners Finish in Top 10 at State

Oakville's Melissa Brown and Lutheran South's Amanda Behnke and Travis Connelly earned medals at state meet in Jefferson City Saturday.

The Lutheran South cross country teams had two runners finish in ninth place at the 2010 state meet.

The Lancers duplicated that feat Saturday at the Class 3 Meet which was held in Jefferson City.

Junior Amanda Behnke equaled her ninth place finish this year in the girl's race, running a 20:08.41.

Senior Travis Connelly had the same finish in the boy's race, finishing in 17:21.82. Lancer Brad Hart had a ninth place finish in 2010.

Oakville sophomore  had the best area finish at state. Brown was eighth in the Class 4 race, finishing in 19:41.86.

Two other area athletes came home with medals from state (the top 25 earned medals). Rockwood Summit junior Alyssa Jones was 12th and Cor Jesu sophomore Jill Whitman was 21st in the girl's Class 4 run. No area athletes medaled in the boy's Class 4 race. Fox junior Larry Lopez had the best finish, as he was 33rd.

FOOTBALL

The football season is over for all area teams as the three squads who advanced from districts lost in the opening round.

Summit fell just short in its comeback attempt in a Class 5 game against Webster Groves Wednesday night.

The Statesmen seemed in control with a 34-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. But the Falcons scored three touchdowns, including one with 30 seconds left on a pass from Tyler Karst to Joe Schenk. Summit converted on a pair of two-point conversions but failed on its last which would have tied the game.

Webster quarterback Rayshawn Simmons completed 20 of 33 passes for 283 yards.

Seckman averted a shutout with one second remaining in its Class 5 playoff game against McCluer Wednesday night as Devon McCoy hit Jeff Dattoli with a 9-yard touchdown pass. But that was the only bright spot for the Jaguars who fell 42-7. Aaron Willis had three interceptions and a fumble recovery for the Comets as Seckman turned the ball over seven times.

SLUH had a 200-yard rusher, a 200-yard receiver and a quarterback who was four yards short of 400 yards in its 57-27 win over Oakville in the first round of the Class 6 playoffs Friday.

Terek Hawkins rushed for 216 yards on just 17 carries and had four touchdowns for the Junior Bills. Trevor McDonagh was 15 of 19 for 396 yards with four touchdowns for SLUH. Cameron Stubbs caught seven passes for 247 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

 and a touchdown for the Tigers while quarterback Andy Oliver was 10 of 16 for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Oliver also rushed for 74 yards and a score.

SOCCER

Four area soccer teams advanced out of district play and two of them will be playing each other Tuesday night.

Oakville won the Class 3 District 7 title when Alex Dieckmann scored the winner in overtime in a . Dieckmann, Jared Swierk and Mike Munsell scored first half goals in the championship game against Vianney. The Griffins scored twice in the second half but Oakville.

Summit also won a pair of one-goal games in winning the Class 3 District 8 championship. The Falcons defeated Lafayette 3-2 in the semifinals and then beat top-seeded Eureka 1-0 in the finals. Justin Thomas had the game's only goal while Sean Clancy had the shutout.

Summit will travel to Oakville Tuesday in a 7 p.m. contest.

Lutheran South was the third area team which was not seeded first but won a district title. The Lancers needed penalty kicks to defeat Affton 1-0 in the semifinals and then beat the top seed, Windsor, 2-1 in the finals in the Class 2, District 3 tournament. Lutheran South hosts Trinity Tuesday night.

Top seeded Bayless won the Class 1, District 2 Tournament in convincing fashion. Demir Tankosic scored four goals in a 10-0 win over Carnahan and Fazlo Alihodzic had three goals in an 8-1 win over Maplewood in the championship game. The Bronchos will play at St. Pius at 3 p.m. Tuesday. St. Pius defeated Bayless 2-1 on Oct. 13.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lutheran South girls volleyball team finished third in the state tournament over the weekend at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

The Lancers were 2-4 in round robin play Friday splitting with eventual Class 3 champion Villa Duchesne (25-23, 23-25) and Pleasant Hill (25-27, 25-23) and losing to St. Pius (25-23, 25-17).

They closed out the season with a nice comeback win in the third place match Saturday over Pleasant Hill 12-25, 26-24, 25-23. Sam Budrovich had 12 kills in the match to pace the Lancers.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week:  had the best area finish at state Saturday. Brown, who started running in 2010, was eighth in the Class 4 race, finishing in 19:41.86.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Summit football's Ian McIntosh was spectacular in defeat for the Falcons as he rushed for 213 yards on 30 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns and one of the two-point conversions.
