Tiger Girls Take Down Lindbergh

The Oakville girls defeated Lindbergh High School 54-31 at Fox Monday night.

The Oakville girls basketball team led 22-4 by the end of the first quarter against Lindbergh and didn’t let up in the first round of district basketball Monday night.

The Tigers held the Flyers to only 11 points in the first half on their way to a 54-31 victory at Fox High School.

“A lot of our offense comes from our defense and when we get out and trap and we get steals and get the ball pushed up, we get a little more confidence in our shooting,” said Oakville coach Aaron Bosch.

Lindbergh could not handle Oakville’s full court press, which led to two turnovers early in the game. The Tigers also went four-for-four at the 3-point line in the first half.

Freshman Alyssa Norberg led the scoring for the Tigers with 14 points and senior Lauren Fussell added 10.

Senior Alison Ries was the top scorer for Lindbergh with 9 points.

“She just goes out, she plays 100 percent all the time, she’s all over the court and she just gives it all,” said Lindbergh coach Bill Thoele about Ries. “She was a great leader for us, she was a captain.”

Thoele said he was proud of his team’s development this season, ending with a 11-14 record.

“I knew this (season) would be a little bit of a struggle,” he said. “We didn’t really have a go-to player, a big scorer. We had to really develop as a team and I think they did that. They just got so much better.”

The game was a complete opposite of the last time the Tigers and Flyers met. Friday, Lindbergh beat Oakville 44-25 at Lindbergh.

“We came out Friday and nailed a lot of shots and they came out tonight with a lot of intensity, I think they wanted some revenge,” Thoele said. “They came out and played hard, they deserve it, they shot the ball really well.”

After the loss, Bosch said he switched up the defense.

“I asked them, would they rather win Friday night or Monday night? We knew what they struggled with before, and we didn’t want to show them that again,” he said. “The girls felt confident tonight and they made their shots.”

Bosch prepared his young team by telling them that district play is no different than the regular season.

Fussell is the only Oakville player who has played in a district basketball game prior to Monday night. Fellow senior Erin Allen was out for the game with a concussion she received on senior night.

“I told them that the 25 games we played beforehand is what their preparation is all about,” Bosch said. “You can’t come into a district game and try to do anything differently.”

Oakville (7-17) moves on to face Cor Jesu Tuesday at 5 p.m.

“We’re going to try and do what we do well and try and make them adjust to us,” Bosch said. “They’re a very good team.”
