Tough Start Continues for Oakville Girls Basketball

Oakville is 1-6 after losing to powerhouse Hazelwood Central, 56-28, on Tuesday night.

It has not been an enjoyable start to this season for the Oakville girls varsity basketball team. They are now 1-6 after losing to powerhouse Hazelwood Central, 56-28, on Tuesday night.

Hazelwood Central is now 4-0 and was led by sophomore guard Alexis Chappelle. Central started slowly and couldn't get untracked offensively until the second half. But, a dominating defensive effort stifled the Tigers, who will have a chance to bounce back against Holt at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17.

"It's a little frustrating that we started out the way we did," said Hazelwood Central Coach Wendy Reeves. "But we made some adjustments at half and came out and played better."

Central forced 19 turnovers and held Oakville scoreless for stretches of 5:03 in the first half and 4:11 in the second. The Hawks scored the final four points of the first half and the first four of the second half to take a 25-15 lead. Candyce Ussery added a key 3-pointer midway through the third quarter that pumped the lead to 34-17. The Hawks cruised the rest of the way.

Despite its tough start, Oakville has had a couple of narrow losses, falling 50-41 at Farmington on Nov. 30, 60-55 to Dexter (at Farmington) on Dec. 4 and 52-40 to Visitation Academy on Dec. 9. The Tigers finished 10-15 last season.

"The early part of our schedule is pretty tough," said first-year Head c=Coach Aaron Bosch, "If we can stay together, play unselfish basketball and pick up the system by midseason then we could be a pretty good basketball team."

The Tigers' leading scorer is senior guard Leslie DeGonia at 10.7 points per game.
