Mehlville Teachers and Students Go Hair-Free for Cancer

Nine students and teachers had their heads shaved Monday in an effort to raise money for cancer research.

Mehlville High School's gym was full of laughter and hair as nine teachers and students shaved their heads to raise money for cancer research.

Students paid $1 to watch the willing participants lose their locks in their advisory period Monday morning. Approximately $190 was raised by the event, known as St. Baldrick.

Greg Adam, a math teacher at Mehlville High School, organized the fundraiser for the second year in a row. The National Honor Society along with girls basketball coach Laura Bishop and boys basketball coach Andy Guethle organized the event with Adam this year. Four members in Adam's family have been diagnosed with cancer, and two have survived. One of those survivors is his father.

"It was time to raise some money. You can never have enough for cancer research," Adam said. The money raised Monday will join the funds raised in the Coaches vs. Cancer basketball game Tuesday benefitting the American Cancer Society for Research, the Hope Lodge in St. Louis and A Camp for Kids in Desoto, a camp for kids who have survived cancer.
