Whiz Kid: Volunteer Helps Muscular Dystrophy Kids at Camp

This Oakville native and graduate of Notre Dame High School is a whiz at helping others.

This week’s Whiz Kid, Alessandra Sicola, volunteered this summer as a counselor at Muscular Dystrophy Camp.

This was my second year being there and this is something I look forward to all summer long. It is a place where I can gain friendships, have rewarding experiences and learn how to put others' needs before mine,” Sicola said. "I have a lot of fun. No matter how hot or tired you are, taking care of a camper at MDA camp and putting a smile on their face is more important than anything else.”

Name: Alessandra Sicola

Accomplishment: Sicola received the Norbert Siegfried Scholarship for Academic Excellence from the St. Anthony’s Hospital Scholarship Program.

Key to Awesomeness: “I think I am a whiz at being creative, whether it is cooking, sewing, or making something simple into something outstanding,” she said. “When it comes to academics, I try to do things to their greatest potential to make sure it’s perfect.”

Sicola feels that her greatest accomplishment so far was to make the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Rockhurst and plans on graduating with a Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy and a minor in Spanish Culture.

“I hope to participate in several mission trips, like the one I am planning for the summer of 2012,” she said. Sicola is planning a five-week trip to Peru with the opportunity to live with a host family and immerse herself in the sights and sounds of the Peruvian culture.
