Yes or No: $700M on St. Louis Rams' Dome Upgrades?

The St. Louis Rams have outlined a renovation plan for the Edward Jones Dome that is estimated to cost $700 million.

The Rams want us to buy them a new house. Just fixing up its current home—the Edward Jones Dome—won't do. Instead, the St. Louis football franchise expects an extreme makeover, to the tune of $700 million, as it is estimated by a company hired by the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission (CVC) to analyze the team's counter proposal to a the CVC's own plan to upgrade the Edward Jones Dome with a $124 million facelift. If someone doesn't cough up the $700 mil to redo the Dome, it is feared the team will take its football and go home to Los Angeles, where it came from before it was the St. Louis franchise. All of this wrangling was set in motion in 1995 when the team negotiated a 30-year lease with the CVC. It was stipulated that the …

Track Stars Vie for Athlete of the Week

Also, Lindbergh defeated Mehlville in district soccer.

Deja vu would be a good thing this week for the Lindbergh girls soccer team. The Flyers were seeded fourth in last year's district tournament and won the title with victories over Mehlville (1-0), Cor Jesu (in penalty kicks) and Rockwood Summit (in a come-from-behind overtime thriller). Lindbergh is once again seeded fourth in the Class 3 District 8 Tournament and the Flyers took the first step toward what it hopes will be a repeat with a 2-0 victory over Mehlville in the first round Saturday at Mehlville. The game was scoreless at half before senior Kate Campbell scored for the Flyers. Mehlville had a tremendous scoring opportunity while down 1-0 after a corner kick. But Flyer goalkeeper Nina Tzianos made the initial save and back …

Two-Game Win Over Oakville Gives Panthers District Edge

Mehlville defeated the Tigers on their way to a second-place finish in the district tournament.

Mehlville got sweet revenge Friday night as they defeated cross-town rival Oakville in two games, 25-19 and 25-19. The Panthers previously fell to the Tigers on Senior Night at Oakville, but won when it counted at the Class 4 District 1 tournament, also hosted at Oakville. “That’s a big hump that our school has fought to get over for awhile,” Mehlville coach James Fischer said. “They’ve owned us. Finally getting over that hump is beautiful.” Mark Leininger led in kills for Mehlville with eight, but sophomore Ryan Hoyer tacked five, showing his worth in the postseason. “Ryan Hoyer is a star in the making. As a sophomore, he’s gone through the process, he’s had some developing to do,” Fischer said. “I expect big things from him in the future…

After victories over Fort Zumwalt West, Oakville and Northwest, the Panthers fell to De Smet, earning them the second-place finish in the Class 4 District 1 tournament Friday.  Mehlville will start the state tournament on Monday, playing the winner of District 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Kirkwood High School.  The team started by calmly defeating Fort Zumwalt West 25-11 and 25-18 and kept control in a two-game defeat over rival Oakville, 25-19 and 25-19.  After beating Northwest 25-15 and 25-23, the Panthers took on No. 1-ranked De Smet.  Mehlville fell in three games, 15-25, 25-17 and 9-15.  "We came out really flat in the first game, I think because of the layover between matches," said coach James Fischer. "We didn't do well at all." Fischer …

Oakville Ends Season in District Tournament

The Tiger volleyball team lost three out of four matches Friday.

The Oakville volleyball season is over after what first-year coach Kelsey Husak called a rebuilding year. With only one returning varsity player from the state champion team, the squad lost three out of four matches in the district tournament Friday.  The Tigers fell to Mehlville in two games 25-19, but won the second match against Fort Zumwalt West in three, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12.  After a 25-19, 25-16 loss to De Smet, Husak said the Tigers had fun in their last match against Northwest. The Lions won 25-11 and 25-23 to finish Oakville's season. The coach said the team played the best against De Smet, but after the Spartans went on a few runs, the Tigers could not catch up.  See more photos from the tournament on our Facebook page.

Lacrosse Team Learning Quickly in First Season

The Mehlville club team had its inaugural season this spring.

The girls on the Mehlville lacrosse team have only been playing for 12 weeks, but notched three wins and one tie for their first season. The area’s newest club team formed this fall and brings one of the fastest-growing girls sports to South County. The team has 14 girls and with 12 on the field, there is little rest for the players. “It was rough at first,” sophomore Madison O’Brien said. “Other teams didn’t like us very much. We didn’t know how to check, so we would hit them a lot.” Mehlville parent Patrick Honig wanted to start the team and began recruiting players during lunch at the two high schools. His daughter, Sophia, is the goalie on the team and the only one with previous experience. Honig organized the team and asked Mehlville …

Lindbergh Golf and Mehlville Baseball Face Off for Athlete of the Week

Also, baseball districts start this weekend.

The Affton baseball team was coming off an offensive explosion entering Thursday's non-conference contest against Mehlville. The Cougars defeated McCluer South-Berkeley 29-3 Wednesday, scoring nine runs in the first inning, nine more in the second and eight in the third in the four-inning game. Affton should have saved some runs for Thursday, as it went from scoring 29 runs to being shut out by the Panthers. Senior southpaw Aaron Onkle pitched five scoreless innings as the Panthers defeated Affton 10-0 in six innings. "That was the longest outing in Aaron's career," Mehlville coach Tim Ode said. "We have used him in several different scenarios although he has not pitched that much. He had one other start, against Parkway South, which he …
