"What's going up at Mehlville High School?" Not everyone knows about the high school's new construction project, according to some of the district's Board of Education members. With underground work nearly complete on a new auditorium, President Venki Palamand said he's been asked quite a bit recently about the activity at the school. Board Secretary Larry Felton even said someone thought it was a parking garage. The new auditorium, which is scheduled to be completed in November 2013, was approved this January. The board is now looking into purchasing a sign letting passersby know more about the project. So far, construction is within budget, Superintendent Eric Knost said. Mehlville School District’s two major construction projects—tennis courts at Bernard Middle School and an auditorium at Mehlville High School—are moving along on schedule. Here’s your update, according to superintendent Eric Knost: Tennis Courts Construction on the tennis courts at Bernard Middle School is completed, Knost said. Workers are waiting for seven days where the temperatures stay above 50 degrees in order to paint and seal the courts. The courts are scheduled to be completed in March after some final grading and landscaping work. Holes in the ground aren't usually newsworthy, but this dirt pit is on its way to becoming Mehlville School District's first auditorium. The school held an official groundbreaking last month. On Wednesday, several tractors were hard at work on the construction site. SEE RELATED STORIES: On October 17, the board approved a contract with Wright Construction Services for a base bid of $5,134,000 to build the 20,300 square foot auditorium. With a seating capacity of 522, the auditorium will support a wide range of academic, musical, theatrical and civic events. The auditorium is expected to open in the Fall of 2013. The Mehlville School District held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its first auditorium Wednesday. Students from Mehlville High School's theater, choir, orchestra and band departments joined school officials at the groundbreaking, representing the students who will perform in the auditorium once it's built.
