Retro Appliance Comes to the Aid of Busy Mehlville Families

Foodie Mary K. Morgan rediscovers an old appliance; saving time while adding flavor.

The chill of autumn is in the air and thoughts turn to hot, healthy, hearty meals. The problem is, people in Mehlville are busy. Who has the time to spend hours in the kitchen preparing a fancy supper for the family? If your reply is, "I don't," or "Do I look like Julia Child?" It's time to discover, or rediscover the slow cooker. In the 1960s, a small company produced a clever little brown ceramic cooker called The Beanery. The original concept was an electrical appliance made of crockery that claimed to do one task only, cook beans. In 1970, Rival bought the company that produced them, redesigned the little bean cooker and things started cooking fast, or rather, "slow."
