Pick A Bone Wins South County's Barbecue Food Fight

The Fenton eatery edged Bandana's in Arnold in the polling.

Pick A Bone BBQ in Fenton is the winner in this week's Food Fight, in which we asked readers for their choice for best barbecue in South County (which, for our competition's purposes, also includes north Jefferson County). Pick A Bone BBQ (at the Pink Elephant Gas n Stuff parking lot) won with 35 percent of the votes among the four finalists, just edging Bandana's Bar-B-Q in Arnold, which had 33 percent. Patch Picks: Memorial Day Barbecues Abound on the First Unofficial Weekend of Summer

The three-day Memorial Day weekend is observed locally as a time to honor our fallen soldiers and as a time to celebrate being with our families at a backyard barbecue.

Patch polled area residents and visitors as to what is the perfect blend of sauce to slather on their barbecue this weekend. Although the responses varied, most backyard chefs began their personal concoctions with commercial sauces. Ken Griffey of Mehlville depends on his wife, Pat, to stir up the sauce, be he prefers a blend of Maull’s Original and a Catalina salad dressing. Maggie Voss of Oakville usually barbecues chicken or pork steaks covered with either Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce or K. C. Masterpiece. “I never mix them it’s one or the other,” said Voss. Oakville Dierberg’s butcher Jeremy Smothers is a purist and uses only Sweet Baby Ray’s when cooking at home. “I don’t add anything. It’s perfect as is,” said Smothers. Backyard chef Kevin…

Mehlville Optimists Make Fundraising Delicious

The annual Mehlville Optimist Club BBQ volunteers planned to serve more than 1,200 people.

For roughly 35 years, the Mehlville Optimist Club has set up shop on the corner of Lemay Ferry and Mehl in Oakville for their annual barbecue fundraiser. In the course of the weekend, the club planned to serve more than 1,200 people. This is just one of the many fundraisers throughout the year that the Mehlville Optimist Club runs to benefit the community.  "Our fundraisers usually put us around $15,000 over the amount we need to run our operations," said MOC president, Milt Lane. "That money is all given back to student organizations, and to United Way, and to families in our community that the Salvation Army helps us to connect with."
