Ten Magical Children’s Books For Gift-Giving

Patch asked newly-published children's book author Jo Ann Kairys of Monmouth County to tell us about the most magical children's book on the shelves this holiday season. Here is her list.

Kids say and do the darndest things, right? And so often, they provide tender or hilarious or wonder-filled inspiration for picture books. One day I heard my granddaughters complaining about the rain as they thumped on the window. Eager to get outdoors, they waited impatiently for the storm to end. Suddenly, they pretended they were the rain. “SWOOSH! SPLAT! SWISH!” Their sounds were innocently poetic, perfect ingredients for a rhyming picture book. Putting it all together in story form is when the magic happens—a sound in just the right place, a vibrant image that brings the story alive, and characters who draw you right into their world. There are so many wonderful children’s picture books. I’d like to share a few from 2011 that I think …

I'd also add 'I Want To Go To The Moon' by Tom Saunders - Great little book about a little boy named Neil Armstrong who grows up saying he wants to go to the moon and everyone says he'll never go to the moon. It comes with a CD where the author sings the lyrics in a folksy kind of tune. My daughter can't get enough. :) Looking forward to Sunbelievable http://www.amazon.com/dp/1897476566/ref=…   more ›

Patch Picks: Create Some Special Mother’s Day Memories This Year

Treat mom to some very special, thoughtful Mother's Day gifts this year. Here are five ideas to get you started thinking about your mother and what type of celebration she might enjoy.

Buy two copies of Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. One is for her and one is for you so that you can discuss and enjoy the story together. You may want to see the movie together after you both read the book. A family photo shoot is a fun way to get everyone together. It can range from a do-it-yourself project to a formal studio shoot depending on your budget. Either way you choose to go, it is safe to say that mom will be pleased with the result. Go on a “nursery to nursery” shopping trip with mom and pick out plants for her garden. Fortunately, the middle of May is planting time around here, so you can have the fun of planting them together as well. If you can paint, offer your services to brighten up a room or two at your mom’s house. …
