Patch has counted 205 Missouri cases in the so-called Boy Scout "perversion files" gathered by the Los Angeles Times. The Greater St. Louis Boy Council wants parents to know it’s working to prevent abuse within its ranks.
In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America were found liable for the molestation of a 12-year-old Oregon Boy Scout in the 1980s. During the case, the Oregon Supreme Court ordered the BSA to release several decades of its confidential "ineligible volunteer files" as evidence. The Associated Press, the New York Times and several other media outlets demanded that the files become public record. On October 18, those records, since dubbed the “perversion files,” were posted with permission of the court by the plaintiff’s attorney. The Los Angeles Times released another batch of records they collected from both the Oregon case and a similar 1992 California lawsuit. Media outlets across the country, including Patch, have been combing through the database…

After a close brush with death, Michael O'Donnell decided to serve in the Navy.
Michael O'Donnell often wears a thick silver bracelet. Engraved in it, is the name Karl, O'Donnell's business partner turned friend. Karl T. Smith was one of the nearly 3,000 victims on Sept. 11, 2001. He worked on 104th floor of the first tower. O'Donnell and Smith met while trading bonds. He remembers Smith as a man with a good sense of humor, doing great impersonations of the partners they traded with; a good, honest man. O'Donnell worked for A.G. Edwards then, and in Sept. 2001, made a business trip to Long Island to train a sales floor. During the trip, he planned a visit with Smith. The two made afternoon plans for lunch in the World Trade Center. "I was looking forward to it," O'Donnell said. "And, taking in the view." However, that…
The recruiting night will be held Sept. 1.
The Boy Scouts of St. Louis will be hosting a recruiting night at all elementary schools in the Mehlville School District on Sept. 1. Starting at 7 p.m., boys in grades 1-5 will be able to visit any one of their elementary schools and learn about joining Scouts. Each fall, the St. Louis Council puts on a "School Night to Join Scouting" recruitment drive. In past years, more than 8,000 new Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers have signed on. "Over the years, this has been possible because of the cooperation of our school district superintendents, principals and teachers," said Gravois Trail District Director Robert Sinda in an email to Patch. "Letting us use the buildings, passing out flyers, hanging posters and allowing someone from the …
