Wrestling senior Jimmy Brockman went 1-2 at the state tournament. Last year, the team didn't have anyone qualify.
The Mehlville wrestling season officially concluded Friday afternoon when senior Jimmy Brockman fell to Lee’s Summit West’s Andrew Niehaus. While Brockman lost the bout 8-2, Coach Chad Coleman said that it was actually one of his better performances of the season. “He warmed up good, I think he wrestled good,” Coleman said. “Obviously, there were a few mistakes here and there, like every kid does though. He made a couple of mistakes that cost him his first match, and he made a couple mistakes in his second match as well, but they weren’t as big. His third match he wrestled well even though he lost.” Brockman’s win in the first round wrestlebacks was against McCluer North’s Delvin Hutson. “I think it was important for him to get that win…

Updated Friday at 6:00 p.m: Mehlville's state qualifying wrestler, Jimmy Brockman, lost to his opponent from Lee Summit West in the consolation bracket at the state tournament at Mizzou. He went 1-2 at state, losing his first and last matches, and finishing his senior season. The match was a good one, according to Panther Coach Chad Coleman. Look for a story on his season and state performance this weekend. COLUMBIA -- Wrestling fans from across the state speckled the typically gold-filled seats of Mizzou Arena all day on Thursday for the 81st Missouri State Wrestling Championships. It took eight simultaneous matches at a time, but all four classes completed their first round matches and also their consolation (wrestleback) rounds. “There…

A grueling Mehlville wrestling season wound down with a trip to Northwest for Class 4, District 1 finals Friday and Saturday. Senior Jimmy Brockman qualified for a trip to the state tournament starting Thursday in Columbia.
A resilient Mehlville Panthers wrestling squad reached Northwest High School for the Class 4, District 1 tournament on Friday. Although they placed only one finalist for the state tournament in Columbia starting this Thursday, the lessons of the season resonated with the wrestlers and coaches during what would be the final rounds of competition for most of the team. “I hoped some of our kids would qualify for state, and I think a lot of them worked hard enough to get there, but the results did not come out that way. We got Jimmy (Brockman) through and we’ll build on that,” said Mehlville coach Chad Coleman. In district competition, the only way to guarantee one will qualify for state is to stay in the championship bracket until the …

Mehlville loses six of seven matches and drops five more due to forfeit as the Panthers suffer a 60-12 loss at Lindbergh.
Mehlville wrestling coach Chad Coleman knew the chances of his team winning at Lindbergh on Wednesday night were pretty slim. Just 32 seconds into the first match, it became impossible. Having to forfeit five matches because the Panthers didn’t have wrestlers to fill each weight class, Mehlville needed pins in seven of eight matches just to force a tie. But any hopes of a miracle went away early in the first round of the first match, when Lindbergh’s Tom Korenak pinned the Panthers’ Jarrath Foster in the 125-pound match. Just like that, Mehlville had lost. The final score was 60-12 Lindbergh. “I told them going in, which I hate doing, but I told them we probably weren’t going to win tonight,” Coleman said. “We had eight kids and if seven …

Though the Panthers enjoyed little team success, they saw good progress and individual success from Dillon Diamond, Kyle Schaeffer and Naim Gasanov.
Mehlville High School's wrestling team traveled to Parkway South this weekend for the Parkway South Patriot Classic Tournament. The Panthers enjoyed little team success at the competition, but saw some important individual victories from wrestlers Dillon Diamond (103-pound weight class), Kyle Schaeffer (171-pound weight class) and Naim Gasanov (189-pound weight class). The tournament featured nearly 30 wrestlers who qualified for, or placed in the Missouri state finals last season. "We understand our program is in an early stage of development and we are encouraged to be able to field a high number of wrestlers at the varsity level and compete against several well-built programs from the area. Individual success is important but all of …

Eureka's experienced team traveled to Mehlville on Tuesday night and left with a 76-0 victory over the Panthers.
Eureka High School brought a deep, veteran wrestling team to Mehlville on Tuesday night and left with a resounding victory over the Panthers. The lopsided victory was a much-needed step for Eureka and a learning experience for Mehlville. As the competition got under way, both schools' coaches anticipated challenges at the heavier weight classes. Head Coach Tim Yancey of Eureka and Mehlville Coach Chad Coleman cited the 171 and 189-pound matchups as contests to watch. Mehlville returned only five varsity members this season and while Coleman acknowledges this is a building year he also believes his team can be more successful if they avoid obvious mistakes. "Tonight we were unable to avoid the errors we knew we needed to prevent in order to…
