Chanese Washington will attend Lindenwood University-Belleville next year and play basketball.
Most coaches are excited to have their players compete at the collegiate level. Although Mehlville High School girls basketball coach Laura Bishop is happy for senior Chanese Washington, she will have a difficult time adjusting to her absence. "We're going to have to reconstruct our whole offense," Bishop said. "Chanese was our lead scorer and assist-maker for the last four years." On Wednesday, Washington signed a letter of intent to attend Lindenwood University-Belleville and play under Coach Annie Ewing. "I'm going to keep trying to get my teammates the ball and those easy shots," she said. Washington said her favorite times as a Panther included winning the Southside Classic both sophomore and senior years and spending time with her…

Marquette breaks a four-game losing streak in a 75-53 win against Mehlville.
Mehlville girls basketball coach Laura Bishop looked at the scoreboard at the end of her team's game at Marquette and saw 75 points on the board for the home team. "That was a killer," Bishop said after the Panthers fell to the Mustangs 75-53. "I really thought we played some good defense. But the put-backs just killed us." Marquette was able to score time and again on offensive rebounds as it reached the 70-point mark midway through the fourth quarter. "Rebounding has been a problem for us lately," Bishop said. "The girls think they are doing a good job of boxing out but they are not." The Panthers had one of their best quarters of the season in the first quarter. They led 20-15 after the quarter on the strength of 10 points from Sierra …

The Panthers have trouble with Parkway South's defensive pressure, losing 62-41.
The Mehlville girls varsity basketball team was overwhelmed by the pressure defense of Parkway South on Tuesday in a 62-41 loss. The Suburban West Conference game was a battle to see which team could remain in the top half of the league standings. “We were great in spurts,” said Mehlville coach Laura Bishop. “It’s not a case of effort. It’s a case of execution on offense and defense.” The Patriots’ tough defense regularly includes a game-long, full-court press and its effectiveness showed against Mehlvile (7-11, 1-2 Suburban West). The Patriots created a high volume of turnovers, including several steals. “If we don’t play defense well, we don’t usually score on offense,” said Parkway South coach Thomas Williams. “We have multiple defenses…

After a poor performance two days earlier, Mehlville beat Rockwood Summit 57-24 on Wednesday to break a three-game losing streak.
Mehlville girls basketball coach Laura Bishop was not a happy camper on Monday after her team lost to Notre Dame, a team they soundly defeated in the Southside Classic earlier in the season. "Coach was extremely upset about how we approached the game and the way we played," said Jessica Fox, the Panthers' senior forward. "I think we came into the game with the thought in the back of our minds that we would win since we had beaten them before. We were overconfident." A completely different Mehlville team stepped onto the home floor Wednesday night against Rockwood Summit. The Panthers scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back. They won 57-24 to break a three-game losing streak. "We learned the other night that we can't…

Chanese Washington scored 25 points to lead the Panthers in a 65-51 win over Lutheran South.
The Mehlville girls junior varsity basketball team walked into the Mehlville gym Thursday night proudly holding the championship trophy from the Southside Classic after a win over DuBourg at Affton. The Panther varsity team joined in the celebration moments later as they capped off a dominating tournament with a 65-51 win over Lutheran South in the championship game. It was the second Southside Classic championship in the last three years for the Panthers, who never trailed in any of the three games. "Winning this championship is very important and gives us a big confidence boost early in the season," said Panther guard Chanese Washington. Washington was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Jessica Fox. "We lost our first …

Pressure defense and balanced scoring lifts Mehlville to a 72-63 victory over St. Elizabeth in its opening game at the Southside Classic Basketball Tournament.
Mehlville struggled to find its composure Monday night, but prospered behind great offensive play in a 72-63 victory over the St. Elizabeth Hawks in the Southside Classic Basketball Tournament. Mehlville, 1-1, applied pressure throughout the game on St. Elizabeth, forcing the Hawks to make a series of turnovers and allowing the Panthers to capitalize with a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Jessica Fox was the first to score in the game; she ran off of a screen on an inbounds play to make a short jumper. Fox finished the night with 15 points and matched Sierra Gray and Ashlee Washington. She also had a team-high of five rebounds. Gray was the early scorer for Mehlville as the Panthers went on a 7-0 run. The sophomore …

In her fifth year as head coach of the Lady Panthers basketball team, Laura Bishop expects her team to play with tempo.
Now in her fifth year as head coach of the Lady Panthers basketball team, Laura Bishop is excited about what the future holds after her team gained valuable experience during a challenging 2009-10 season. The program has had a tough few years in the win-loss column, but last year, four freshmen saw a lot of minutes on the varsity team. Each of those four are back, as well as seniors Jessica Fox, Ashlee Washington and Chanese Washington (no relation). Fox did not play last season; her sister, Mandy, is a junior on the team. Though the team is still very young, many of their players are more experienced than others at their age, said Bishop. Coming off a slightly below average, but still respectable 10-15 record, the Lady Panthers will have…
