Big Plays Finally Go Mehlville’s Way In Big Road Win At Lindbergh

Overjoyed Panthers were simply magnificent in their first win since season opener back in August.

It had been almost exactly two months, since their 2012 season opening win back on August 24, that anyone involved with Mehlville High School football felt like smiling about anything. But late Friday night, as they left Suburban West Conference rival Lindbergh High School's Flyers Field, every single member of the Panther program -- every coach and every player -- was wearing a smile as wide as all outside, thanks to an immensely satisfying 14-2 Mehlville win over the Flyers. "I'm just so happy for these kids," Mehlville head coach Eric Meyer said, after his Panthers put an end to a seven-game losing streak. "They deserve it so much. Here we are, staring at 1-8, and these kids are still out here busting their tails off, working hard and …

Stevenson's fast start powers Oakville past archrival Mehlville

Speedy wideout Avion Stevenson catches two touchdown bombs in the first quarter to help Tigers sprint past battered up Panthers.

All season long, Oakville senior Avion Stevenson has been waiting for his chance to make a big play in a big game. And last week, during Oakville's Homecoming Game against Fox, Stevenson got his chance, when the Warriors punted him the ball just before halftime. The ultra-speedy Stevenson ran circles around the Fox coverage team and raced into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown that would've given Oakville a 14-0 lead in front of its biggest crowd of the season. It was perfect. Just what Stevenson was waiting for. Except for one thing, the play was called back on a penalty. "It felt so great," Stevenson said. "I was so excited. I didn't even know about the penalty until I got to the sideline. And then I was like, 'man, you gotta be …

Turnover Problems Prove Too Much To Overcome As Mehlville Falls At Fox

Panthers cough up four fumbles and throw two interceptions in 41-3 loss against Fox.

Mistakes and the ability to capitalize on them was the key in Friday's Suburban West Conference football showdown between Mehlville and Fox. And at the outset, which began with a botched onside kick on the opening kickoff by Fox, it seemed like the breaks were going to go Mehlville's way. That feeling was further reinforced when the Panthers connected for a 30-yard halfback option pass on the first play of the game. Unfortunately, those two plays were about all Mehlville would get on Friday, as Fox forced six Panther turnovers and capitalized on them all in a convincing 41-3 Homecoming Night victory for the Warriors. "You're not going to win many games turning the ball over six times that's for sure," Mehlville head coach Eric Meyer said…

Injuries to Moore, Partee Hurt Mehlville in Loss to Fort Zumwalt North

The Panthers fell 14-8 to Fort Zumwalt North in their first home game.

Turnovers and injuries brought down the Mehlville High School football team in a 14-8 loss to Fort Zumwalt North Friday at home. The team lost quarterback Brendan Moore and wide receiver/safety Patrick Partee in the first half to injuries. Coach Eric Meyer said it’s uncertain how long they’ll be out. “We need some guys to step up,” he said. “We had some injuries, it’s time to move on; get guys healthy and move on.” Kirkland Burton scored the Panthers’ only touchdown and had several strong carries for the team. One drive started the fourth quarter with six carries before getting stopped on fourth down. “He just ran the ball super hard, that’s kind of what we expect. He came in and did a great job for us,” Meyer said. Joe Murphy, who stepped…

Mehlville Opens Season with 49-22 Rout of Northwest

The Panthers scored 42 points in the first half of the game led by quarterback Brendan Moore.

The Mehlville High School football team came out and scored 42 points in 24 minutes to kick off the 2012 football season. The Panthers soundly defeated the Northwest Lions 49-22 at Northwest.  See more photos of the game and fans on our Facebook page.  “Our kids made plays when they had to,” Mehlville coach Eric Meyer said. “The key was moving the ball around and we completed some big passes.” The coach credited linemen Zack Merritt, Alex Pulcher, Jimmy Sellers, Nick Franey and Connor Besancenez with blocking that led the offensive charge. Mehlville scored once more after the first half when Darrius Williams ran into the end zone with two minutes left. “Mehlville’s a very, very good team,” Northwest coach Nick Hoth said. “They’re big and …

Strong Offensive Line Leads Panthers in Preseason Scrimmage

Head coach Eric Meyer said he's please with how well the Mehlville High School football team did in a preseason scrimmage Friday.

Coach Eric Meyer said his team was tired of beating each other up in practice. But on Friday, the Mehlville football team got plenty of practice beating up other teams during a preseason scrimmage at Oakville, where the offensive and defensive lines were dominant.  See more photos on our Facebook page.  The eight-team scrimmage had the Panthers facing Seckman, Riverview Gardens and Roosevelt high schools in 12-play mini-games. “I thought we had some good things that worked,” Meyer said. “You come out and try to iron some things out and we know there’s more things we have to work on.” The team returns quarterback Brendan Moore, who stepped in last season for an injured Jeff White. White graduated and Moore will take over the offense. Senior…

Alumni Foundation Donates $2,900 to Mehlville Football Program on Senior Night

The Panther Pride Football Alumni Foundation made its last donation prior to the Panthers’ regular-season finale with De Smet, which was senior night, on Friday night.

When 1992 Mehlville graduate Andrew Sutton heard that his alma mater’s football program was having financial trouble, he knew that something needed to be done. Sutton called Mehlville classmate and lifelong friend Phil Spears, and the two decided to create the Panther Pride Football Alumni Foundation in 2003. Over the past eight years, Sutton – the PPFAF’s president – estimated that the foundation has given the Mehlville football program and its boosters about $20,000. The foundation handed over its last donation – a check for $2,900 – prior to the start of the Panthers’ regular-season finale against De Smet on Friday. With Sutton and Spears becoming too busy to keep the organization going, the foundation will be closing down. “We might …

De Smet Blasts Mehlville to Clinch Playoff Spot

The Spartans will take on Eureka in the first round of the playoffs after a 51-7 victory over the Panthers Friday night.

After Mehlville returned a kickoff for a 92-yard touchdown to cut De Smet’s lead to 14-7, the Spartans rolled off 37 unanswered points to blow out the Panthers 51-7. Check back later for a look at the Panthers' Senior Night.  The Friday night win at Mehlville means that De Smet is headed for the Class 6 playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The Spartans have advanced to the state semifinals in three of the past four seasons, and they last won a championship in 2005. “I just told the guys, it’s real simple – from here on out, only one team goes home happy,” De Smet coach Pat Mahoney said. “There’s only one team that finishes the season without a loss. “You can’t beat good teams and you can’t be the team that doesn’t lose playing sloppy …

Lindbergh Holds Off Mehlville in Final Minutes

The Flyers score on a long-pass trick play to take the lead in the final seconds for a 20-15 win over the heartbroken Panthers.

Mehlville fans had approximately 90 seconds of extreme joy when it looked like they were going to pull off a win against Lindbergh Friday night and make it into the state playoffs.  Down 14-7, junior Patrick Partee made one of the best plays of the season when he picked off Flyers' QB Peter Simpson's pass and returned it to the Lindbergh 1-yard line with about two minutes left in the game. Brendan Moore then scored on a quarterback sneak and Partee added a two-point conversion run that gave the Panthers a 15-14 lead with just 1:38 left on the clock. The Flyers trailed 15-14 with about 90 seconds to play on Friday, but hit a 70-yard double pass from senior Jordan Goodman to senior Grant Krueger, then held Mehlville on fourth down from the 1…

Mehlville Opens Districts with Loss to Junior Bills

SLUH's Terek Hawkins ran for 221 yards in the Jr. Bills' 38-0 win over the Panthers on Friday night.

Hawkins carried the ball 27 times and averaged 8.2 yards per carry for the Jr. Bills. SLUH improved to 5-3 and has won four games in a row. The Flyers were defeated 30-13 by De Smet (7-1) in the other District 2 game. Mehlville will play …
