Ellipse Fitness recently held its annual Victory Over Violence fundraiser to benefit A Safe Place, which provides women and children a refuge and assistance in overcoming domestic abuse.
Oakville's Ellipse Fitness has raised more than $2,000 for a Jefferson County domestic violence shelter called A Safe Place. The gym recently held its annual four-hour fitness fundraiser called Victory Over Violence to benefit the charity. The event featured a four-hour fitness marathon, a silent auction and a raffle. Ann Morrow, the gym's owner, said this is the fourth year her gym has sponsored the event. She said the founder of the corporate company started doing the event 10 years ago in Wisconsin to help a women's shelter there. "I like it because it's something different from a run or a regular marathon," Morrow said. "A lot of people just stopped by to donate." A Safe Place provides battered women and their children a comprehensive …

Point Elementary School's principal let students duct tape him to a wall if they brought pies for a school fundraiser.
Point Elementary School principal Dan Giesler found a unique way to motivate his students. Giesler made a deal with his students: anyone who brought a pie to the school's pie sale fundraiser could help duct tape him to the wall of the gym. Hundreds of students brought pies. Students kept Giesler to his word and stuck him with duct tape to the wall Nov. 20. Giesler was so wrapped up that his feet even hung off the floor! Don't miss the photos! More than 500 Special Olympics Missouri supporters turned out to rush into Creve Coeur Lake Saturday afternoon. The organization held a Polar Plunge to raise funds for its local programming. More people came out to participate this year than in 2011. Jocelyn Diehl, Special Olympics Missouri's St. Louis Metro Area Director, said 560 people pre-registered for the event in 2012. Organizers expected between 80 and 100 to register at the event. That's up from the 506 total participants last year, she said. Organizers sent groups of ten at a time into Creve Coeur Lake. Teams included representatives from Oakville High School and Hazelwood West High School. Diehl said the Polar Plunge is one of Special Olympics Missouri's largest fundraising …

The St. Louis County Police took over Texas Roadhouse Tuesday night to help raise money for Special Olympics.
Diners at Texas Roadhouse in Kirkwood Tuesday evening may have been surprised to find police officers serving their food along with the regular staff. Officers of the Third and Fourth Precincts of St. Louis County Police (Affton and South County) were at the restaurant for the annual Cops and Cowboys fundraiser, collecting donations for Special Olympics Missouri. "How often do you get to see police officers in a casual atmosphere, chatting and cracking jokes, and get to help a good cause at the same time?" said Officer Mike Schira of the South County Precinct. Officers each paired up with a server and helped bring food out to the tables, keep drinks full and clear tables. They also chatted with diners, asking people to consider leaving a …
