Patty Crocker grew up with Jefferson Barracks almost in her backyard, and today she volunteers her time to keep it beautiful and safe.
As Patty Crocker was growing up, she spent many hours playing in and walking the paths of Jefferson Barracks Park. “When we were children, my friends and I used to enjoy sitting on the bluff of the Mississippi River near the old train depot and waving at the people in the boats down on the river,” said Crocker. “The park was my backyard. I always loved being there. As I grew older I became even more interested in the rich history of Jefferson Barracks.” Today, Crocker works for the Mehlville School District in the facilities building located in the old post hospital building. In front of her desk is a collage of photos of Jefferson Barracks. “I like to know how things became as they are now. The building that I work in was built in 1905-…

Started 14 years ago as a way to raise money for the local Boy Scout troop, St. Matthias fish frys have become a community staple. "We had 790 people come out one Friday last year and had 757 two weeks ago," said Geri Fogelbach, who organizes the fish fry. More than just food, the fish fry brings together several community groups. Girl Scout Troop 4277 bakes desserts and sells them and the Mehlville High School Pantherette dance team bus the tables. The fish fry features hand-sliced cod fillets that are hand-battered and fried, shrimp and a number of sides. The church will be holding two more fish frys on April 1 and April 15 from 4 to 7 p.m.
