Governor Nixon: Don't Arm Missouri School Teachers

Legislation that would allow teachers with concealed weapons permits to carry guns in school has the support of Missouri House Republican leaders.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced Monday he sent letters to all 520 public school superintendents in the state, opposing legislation that would allow teachers with concealed weapons permits to carry their weapon at school. The bill for the 2013 legislative session was filed following the Newtown, CT shooting, which left 26 people, including 20 children, dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It is co-sponsored by House Republican leaders, including House Speaker Tim Jones and Majority Leader John Diehl. Mehlville School District employs seven St. Louis County Police officers as school resource officers—one at each high school and middle school—to help protect teachers, students and school staff. NRA Calls for Armed Guards in Schools; Mehlville Already Has Officers at High, Middle Schools

The Mehlville School District employs school resource officers at both high schools and each middle school. Elementary schools are patrolled by the middle school officers.

The National Rifle Association called for a stronger armed presence at schools across the country in response to the devastating violence that hit Newtown, CT, just one week ago. "The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection," said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, on Friday. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Would you rather have your 911 call bring a good guy with a gun from a mile away or a minute away?" See the full text of the speech here. Mehlville School District employs seven school resource officers—one at each high school and middle school. Officers from the middle schools also each patrol …

St. Louis County Police Chief Wants to Arm School Officials With Guns

In the wake of the Newtown, CT school massacre, St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch will visit schools this week to discuss increasing security, including putting guns in elementary schools.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch and police officers will begin visiting St. Louis County schools Monday morning, according to KMOV. (For instant updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Fitch said he's received numerous calls from area schools concerned about security since Friday's mass shooting in a Newtown, CT elementary school.  Fitch acknowledges that most high schools and some middle schools, including those in West County, have armed school resource officers.  However, elementary schools are not normally protected by officers. Fitch wants to see armed resource officers or armed school officials in those schools, according to KSDK. He points out that Sandy Hook Elementary School conducted threat drills and locked its …

No Answers in Stolen Civil War Pistols Case

The Civil War guns were on display in Jefferson Barracks and would be difficult to sell.

Authorities are still puzzled over how four Civil War-era pistols displayed at the Ordnance Room at Jefferson Barracks could have been stolen. St. Louis County Police are investigating the thefts, which went unnoticed until the Civil War in the West exhibit closed last week. The pistols were on loan from two different collectors, said J.D. Magurany, the museum's site manager. The guns were stolen sometime in the last three weeks, and the building is secured at night with steel plates over the door and an alarm, police told KMOV. There were no signs of forced entry or an activated alarm in the last three weeks. Just as puzzling as how the guns were stolen is why someone would take four civil war pistols. They aren't efficient enough to rob …

Legislature Lowers Minimum Conceal and Carry Age to 21

Rep. Marsha Haefner, R-Oakville, said wide-ranging firearms bill shows General Assembly has "taken steps to protect and advance our 2nd Amendment rights.”

Legislation dropping the minimum age to procure a conceal and carry permit is awaiting Gov. Jay Nixon’s signature. Under current law, Missourians who are 23 and older can receive a conceal and carry permit. Rep. Jeanie Riddle’s legislation—which passed on the last day of the General Assembly’s session—would lower that minimum age to 21. According to a summary of the bill, Riddle’s legislation would also: -          Prohibit sales tax on any firearms or ammunition from being levied at a higher rate than sales tax or other excise tax charged on sporting goods, equipment or hunting equipment. -          Not preclude a member of the General Assembly, a full-time or legislative employee of the General Assembly or statewide elected officials and…
