Things are looking up for retailers as solid sales in recent months could mean that shoppers are ready to spend more this holiday season, according to an L.A. Times business report. Despite the expected sales growth, 67 percent of retailers surveyed by the Hay Group planned to keep their seasonal hiring at the same levels as last year, and 24 percent plan to hire even fewer workers. Area resale shops are seeing a spike in sales—and community service. In Mehlville, two resale shops have seen a significant boost in sales going into the holiday season. "We usually do about $500 to $600 a month, but in October we hit $900," said Debbie Lampe, treasurer of St. Luke's Re-Sell-It Shop. With low prices as the main attraction, the resale shops combat high holiday spending. The typical person age 35 to 44 plans on spending an average of $520.36 on gifts, according to a 2009 survey by the National Retail Federation.
