Alumni Foundation Donates $2,900 to Mehlville Football Program on Senior Night

The Panther Pride Football Alumni Foundation made its last donation prior to the Panthers’ regular-season finale with De Smet, which was senior night, on Friday night.

When 1992 Mehlville graduate Andrew Sutton heard that his alma mater’s football program was having financial trouble, he knew that something needed to be done. Sutton called Mehlville classmate and lifelong friend Phil Spears, and the two decided to create the Panther Pride Football Alumni Foundation in 2003. Over the past eight years, Sutton – the PPFAF’s president – estimated that the foundation has given the Mehlville football program and its boosters about $20,000. The foundation handed over its last donation – a check for $2,900 – prior to the start of the Panthers’ regular-season finale against De Smet on Friday. With Sutton and Spears becoming too busy to keep the organization going, the foundation will be closing down. “We might …

Mehlville, Lindbergh Set For District Football Elimination Game Friday

The Panthers take on the Flyers at Lindbergh Friday at 7 p.m.

After suffering losses in their district playoff openers last week, perennial South County football powers Mehlville (4-4) and Lindbergh (5-3) both find themselves facing elimination from playoff contention when they meet Friday night at Lindbergh’s Flyers Field. The current Missouri playoff system means only two teams from each district can make the playoffs, and with one loss each already, the team that takes a second defeat will have no shot at all at advancing to the postseason this year. Mehlville played quite possibly its worst game of the year last week in a 38-0 home loss against SLUH. Traditionally a stout defensive club, the Panthers allowed the Jr. Billikens nearly 250 rushing yards and more than 350 total yards in what proved …

Mehlville Opens Districts with Loss to Junior Bills

SLUH's Terek Hawkins ran for 221 yards in the Jr. Bills' 38-0 win over the Panthers on Friday night.

Led by senior Terek Hawkins’ 221 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns, the St. Louis University High Junior Billikens shut out the Mehlville Panthers 38-0 Friday night at Mehlville. Hawkins carried the ball 27 times and averaged 8.2 yards per carry for the Jr. Bills. SLUH improved to 5-3 and has won four games in a row. The Panthers dropped to 4-4 overall (4-3 Suburban West Conference). The Jr. Bills snapped Mehlville's three-game winning streak. SLUH has defeated Mehlville four consecutive times. SLUH is now 1-0 in District 2 action, while Mehlville is 0-1. The Panthers will need a bounce-back effort next week when they travel to Lindbergh (5-3). The Flyers were defeated 30-13 by De Smet (7-1) in the other District 2 game. Mehlville will play …

Big Plays Help Mehlville to Third Victory in a Row

Mike Sulya has two early touchdown receptions and Patrick Partee has a long kickoff return in a 30-10 victory over Parkway South.

Mehlville senior Mike Sulya spent three weeks on crutches after suffering a bone bruise in the game against Oakville. Sulya got clearance from the doctors to play Monday and it took him less than a quarter to score a pair of touchdowns that sparked a 30-10 Panther victory over Parkway South in the final non-district game of the season. "I really was worried that I wasn't going to get to play again this season," said Sulya, who is also an outstanding high jumper. "That was my worst fear during my senior year. But I felt brand new tonight and felt 100 percent." The Patriot defenders would agree as Sulya took a pair of short passes from Jeff White and converted them into long touchdowns. The first went for 68 yards with 8:50 to go in the …

Panthers Reach .500 with Shutout Win

Mehlville improved to 3-3 with a 14-0 Suburban West Conference victory Friday at Marquette.

Mehlville football coach Eric Meyer was not sure the last time the Panther defense recorded a shutout as it did in a 14-0 victory over Marquette Friday night in a Suburban West Conference contest. "I am sure it was when "The Man" was coaching," Meyer said. "The Man" was legendary Panther coach Gary Heyde and it has been a long time since Heyde was patrolling the Mehlville sideline. "Coach (Dale) Gegg said it all when he said that it has been eight quarters now that we have not allowed a touchdown," Meyer said. Gegg is the defensive coordinator for a team which allowed just two field goals the previous week against Fox. "It's finally starting to sink in on defense," said linebacker Dan Kerckhoff, who had three tackles for losses in the …

Zufall's Late-Game Heroics Lead Mehlville's Win Over Fox

Brandon Zufall scored on a 1-yard run with 54 seconds left to help the Panthers to a 12-6 win over the Warriors.

With 4:30 left in the fourth quarter and the game tied at 6, the Mehlville Panthers needed someone on their offense to step up and break the deadlock with the Fox Warriors. And that’s exactly what Panthers senior running back Brandon Zufall did. Zufall carried the ball eight times for 54 yards on Mehlville’s final drive and punched in the go-ahead touchdown from one yard out with 54 seconds left. Zufall was initially stopped at the 1-yard line, but he spun out of a tackle and reached across the end zone to give the Panthers a 12-6 victory. “It was supposed to be an outside run,” Zufall said. “I took it outside and I saw a hole, cut back and just drove with my leg. I was hitting every hole that my (offensive) line created. I was just doing …

Mehlville Looks To End Three-Game Losing Streak

The Panthers will try to rebound from last week's 34-17 loss to Oakville when they play 0-3 Fox on Friday night.

The Mehlville Panthers host Suburban West Conference foe Fox on Friday and both teams will look to end the three-game losing streaks they carry into the matchup. After winning its season opener over Northwest, Mehlville (1-3 overall, 1-3 in the Suburban West) has dropped its last three games by an average of 18 points per game. The Panthers lost 34-17 at Oakville last Friday. Mehlville will look for senior QB Jeff White to regroup the offense after loosing junior RB Chayse Brown to a knee injury in the Lafayette game. White has completed 21 of his 52 pass attempts this season for 240 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Brown led the team in rushing with 45 attempts for 358 yards, an 8-yard-per-carry average. He has also scored …

Oliver Leads Oakville Past Mehlville

Sophomore quarterback Andy Oliver throws a pair of touchdown passes and runs for another as the Tigers defeat the Panthers 34-17 at Oakville.

Check out more photos of the game and the fans on the Patch Facebook page! Oakville sophomore Andy Oliver has only been playing the quarterback position for a year and a half. And the last thing that he expected was to be under center for the big rivalry game against Mehlville. But Oliver, a former wide receiver, was indeed the starting quarterback Friday night and he had a game he will remember forever. Oliver completed eight of 17 passes for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Oliver also scored a rushing touchdown as Oakville won 34-17 at home. "I didn't expect to be playing this year, but I got my opportunity when Javon (Henderson) got injured in the first game and I am just trying to make the best of it," Oliver said. Oliver has the …

Panthers, Tigers Kick Off 2011 Football Season Friday

The Oakville Tigers' football team will try to defeat conference foe Lindbergh while Mehlville takes on Northwest.

The Oakville High School Tigers’ football team will host Suburban West Conference rival Lindbergh on Friday at 7 p.m. in the regular season opener for both teams. Oakville (2-8 last year) will look to avenge last season’s 39-7 loss to the Flyers (9-3 last year). Lindbergh has defeated Oakville each of the past four seasons. The Tigers return eight offensive starters from their 2010 squad, including senior QB Javon Henderson and all five offensive linemen. Defensively, Oakville will rely on Henderson and brother Jaron Henderson, a senior, to lock down a talented Lindbergh aerial attack. Lindbergh, which made it to the Missouri Class 6 state quarterfinals last season, returns senior QB Peter Simpson, who threw 19 touchdowns and 19 picks in …

Mehlville Football Aims for the Postseason

Coach Eric Meyer and the Mehlville football team will try to improve upon last season's 3-7 record. The Panthers begin the regular season on Aug. 26.

The last four years have been full of highs and lows for Eric Meyer and the Mehlville High School football program. In 2007, the Panthers made it to the Missouri Class 6 state championship game before falling to Rockhurst in the final, 28-9. But during the offseason, Gary Heyde – who had been Mehlville’s head football coach for 27 years – stepped down from the position. In Meyer’s first season at the helm, the Panthers went 7-4 and made it back to the state playoffs. After losing several terrific players to graduation, Mehlville had a nightmare 2009 season. The team went 0-10 and lost by an average margin of 21.2 points per game. Last year was a solid step forward for the program, as the Panthers had a 3-5 mark within the Suburban West …
