Okay folks. It's time to move forward. After talking to our new president Venki Palamand and our new new vice president Larry Felton, I am pretty sure that these fine gentlemen will work together with our new 3 board members. I hope Tom Dehil will be open minded and join in. Of course there will be differences. but I am sure they all will work it out at the end on any issues. "This is not just a …   more ›

The three candidates—Michael Doyel, Elaine Powers and John Roland—were chosen through a written questionnaire and interview process. The MNEA has a legislative action committee who oversees the endorsement process. “The questions that were asked are designed to elicit their knowledge of the district,” said Karen Torretta, president of the MNEA. “They focused on children, current issues and finances.” Torretta said candidates were asked about their involvement within the district and the community. I think it is important to consider the opinions of those who are in the trenches of education every day. The classroom teachers of the Mehlville School District know what is good for education and I usually trust their endorsements. Unfortunately, there are four decent candidates out of nine for three spots.   more ›

VIDEO: School Board Candidates' Opening and Closing Statements

Watch the candidates as they introduce themselves and their issues.

Nine candidates vying for three open positions on the Mehlville school board met Wednesday at a forum aimed at giving voters a better understanding of themselves and their issues.  Each candidate gave a two-minute opening and closing statement in which they shared everything from family life, to qualifications to hobbies to their motivations for seeking a position on the school board.  Each candidate's statements are in the above videos.

School Board Candidates Discuss Budget, Student Performance

Approximately 60 community members attended the forum Wednesday night at Mehlville High School.

Nine candidates gathered together for the first time to discuss district issues in a community forum hosted by the Mehlville Legislative Network at Mehlville High School Wednesday night. The candidates, vying for three positions on the board, gave two-minute opening and closing statements and then answered questions submitted by the approximately 60 district residents in attendance. The district’s budget was a common theme in the questions, the first of which asked candidates what they would cut in the operating fund after a recent survey came out saying the Mehlville School District had high student achievement for its per-pupil spending. All of the candidates said they were excited to hear the results and weren't surprised. However, …

Great article. I think every candidate that is truly concerned about public education would do themselves and this community a world of good to visit two schools in the Mehlville School District. First, visit Rogers Elementary and have a conversation with the principal about their successes and unique needs. Then, visit Forder Elementary and have a conversation with the principal there about …   more ›

As a family and faith-centered man, Roland plans to take a positive approach to problem solving if he's elected to the Mehlville School Board.

John E. Roland, Jr., born in Columbia, MO, has lived in the Oakville area for nearly 22 years. After thinking about it for several years, Roland has decided to run for a position on the Mehlville School Board. He said that his 11-year involvement with the Mehlville Optimist Club and experiences working with many of the principals and administrators within the district prompted him to consider running. “I never did it before because my kids were so young,” he said. “An opportunity came up this time around, and I had people in the community telling me I’d be great for the school board because I do so much with the kids already.” Roland said that when he mentioned the idea of running for the school board at a family dinner, his wife told him …

I work with John and his kids in the Youth Group. John's a wonderful example for the kids and he really has a passion for supporting and caring for them. The School Board is yet another way he will find to serve the children in this district and provide the leadership that we could use a lot more of in our communities. Good luck, John!   more ›
