Preview: School Board to Tackle Kindergarten Tuition Tomorrow

The Mehlville School District takes on the issue of free full-day kindergarten Thursday night.

How much will parents pay to send their kindergarteners to Mehlville's full day program next year? That's the question the Mehlville School District Board of Education will take on Thursday night. Want to comment? Want to tell the school board your thoughts about free, full-day kindergarten? Parents and community members can address the board at Thursday's 7 p.m. meeting at the administration building at 3120 Lemay Ferry Road. Be sure to fill out a speaker's card. Mehlville is one of only four districts in Missouri that charges tuition for its full-day kindergarten, and tuition-free classes have grown in popularity nationwide. The three remaining districts are also in St. Louis County: Lindbergh, Rockwood and Webster Groves school …

Get your Refunds! ? Maybe!? Why has Mehlville been charging $2,000 Tuition for Kindergarten children? Public Schools are supposed to be FREE. Here's my reason: Missouri's constitution states: "FREE PUBLIC SCHOOLS providing "gratuitous Instruction" for all persons ages , prior to age 21." Kindergarten is for ages "prior to age 21", isn't it? So, why has Mehlville been charging $2,000 tuitions?   more ›

Free, Full-Day Kindergarten Option ‘Very Promising’ in Mehlville Schools

The Mehlville School District Board of Education will dedicate its Nov. 29 meeting to deciding whether to offer tuition-free, full-day kindergarten.

Tuition-free, full-day kindergarten at the Mehllville School District may be coming closer and closer to reality, but the final decision won’t be made until a meeting later this month. “It is looking very promising that I will be recommending a tuition-free kindergarten program for full day kindergarten for next year,” Superintendent Eric Knost told the Mehlville School Board at the Nov. 7 meeting. The plan depends on having more than 600 families sign up for the full-day classes, and the district is still analyzing enrollment data from October. The board decided to dedicate its Nov. 29 meeting to analyzing enrollment numbers and making a final decision on the program. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the administration building at 3120…

Mehlville Schools Kindergarten Enrollment Starts Today

Parents will sign up their children for Mehlville School District's 2013-14 Kindergarten classes this week, and the enrollment numbers will decide whether the district offers tuition-free, full-day classes.

Will Mehlville School District offer free full-day kindergarten this year? This week's enrollment will tell. If more than 600 families enroll their children into the 2013-14 full-day kindergarten class, the school district will recieve enough state funding to fund the program without tuition costs or dipping into the district's budget. Otherwise, the district charges more than $2,000 per year. Kindergarten enrollment for the Mehlville School District 2013-14 school year runs from October 22 to October 25. Parents should contact their neighborhood elementary school and make an appointment during that week. Find contact information for your local elementary school here: Parents can register their children during school hours the week or …

Free Full-Day Kindergarten Plan Needs 600+ Class Size for Approval

The Mehlville School District is considering offering full-day kindergarten for free if enough students register this month for next school year. Is your child entering kindergarten? Vote in our poll if you prefer full-day or half-day programs.

Enrollment numbers this month will determine whether the Mehlville School District joins the statewide trend of offering a tuition-free, full-day kindergarten program next year. If more than 600 families enroll their children into the 2013-14 full-day kindergarten class, the school district will recieve enough state funding to fund the program without tuition costs or dipping into the district's budget. Otherwise, the district charges more than $2,000 per year. But there’s a time crunch. Planning for next year’s classes starts in December, so the district is opening kindergarten enrollment in the last week of October. (Look below for instructions on how to enroll.) Superintendent Eric Knost called full-day kindergarten “part of my vision …

School Board Sets Full Day Kindergarten Tuition Rate, Approves Audit

Kindergarten tuition will stay the same as the current year.

The full day kindergarten tuition rate will stay the same for 2012-2013 as it is for the 2011-2012 school year. Currently, the annual cost for full day kindergarten in the district is $2,275. The Mehlville School District Board of Education made the unanimous decision Thursday at a meeting in the administration building. As of November, the district had 679 students enrolled in kindergarten and Chief Financial Officer Noel Knobloch approximated between 200 and 275 students were in the full day program. Knobloch said the tuition covered the costs of the program and generated a small, positive revenue for the district without accounting for utilities and space costs.  The district increased its tuition rate by approximately 10 percent in …

School Board Looks to the Future

An empty seat, tuition and a new website holds the board's attention at Thursday's meeting.

School Board Raises Kindergarten Tuition, Passes Audit The school board voted Thursday 4-2 in favor of raising annual full-day kindergarten tuition rates by $75 for the Mehlville School District. After hearing a report by Chief Financial Officer Noel Knobloch, the board raised tuition for the 2011-2012 school year to $2,275 per year for full-day kindergarten. Knobloch reported the increase was due to inflation, rather than the failure of Proposition C in the Nov. 2 election. Under the 88-cent tax increase, the district would have created a free full-day kindergarten program. "We're not making up costs for the district, but simply continuing to adjust the price for inflation," he said. The district's last raise was $200 in 2008, following …
