Election Day 2012: Voting Underway at Local Polls

Stick with Patch as we keep you updated throughout the day on Tuesday's elections.

Oakville residents slowly trickled in to Queen of All Saints early Tuesday morning to cast their vote for two members of the Mehlville school board as well as a county facilities measure. Signs littered the yard outside the church for Ron Fedorchak, Mike Wainz, Kathleen Eardley and Fred Padberg, the four board candidates. Heading to the polls later? Check out our voters' guide. Jamie Wyatt said he came out to vote for the school board race, where he would be supporting Mike Wainz and Ron Fedorchak. “I like kids,” he said. “And my wife is a teacher in the district.” Another resident, Dave Bertelsen, said he supported Fred Padberg and Kathleen Eardley because they were the more conservative candidates. “It’s our civic responsibility as …

Mehlville Motherhood

Election Day: What the District Needs

The Mehlville school board must effectively communicate why needs are not wants.

Local elections often bring up discussions of needs versus wants for the community. Explaining to our children the difference between a want and a need is a daily event in some households. Teaching my son that he doesn’t need to play video games is a relatively easy one. Explaining to him why we, as a family, need a vacation, but that the need turns into a want when we discuss Disneyland, is a little trickier. Sometimes, needs and wants come together blissfully, like when my 2-year-old begs for strawberries or edamame. I congratulate myself for being such a good mom quickly, before I have a chance to discover that she’s also just chewed and swallowed every piece of the giant pack of gum in my purse. There are times when I have to have …

Letter to the Editor: Fedorchak and Wainz for Mehlville School Board

One district parent shares his choice for Tuesday's election.

It is encouraging and exciting to see the Mehlville School District moving forward with their initiative to construct a new district auditorium as well as the prospect for offering tuition-free full day kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year; all without a tax increase. The efforts of the board continue to show a commitment to the overall betterment of the community. I feel the two best candidates to build the District’s momentum are Ron Fedorchak and Mike Wainz. Mr. Fedorchak, a current board member will capitalize on his experience and continue putting the educational needs of the children first, while Mr. Wainz brings a new, fresh perspective as an active parent of children who receive additional support from the Special School …

Are there other real options this time around? One mother of three kids three and under won't have the time necessary to devote to the board, and the other candidate refuses to participate in much of anything Patch has done to get out information about this election. I could almost totally disagree with everything Fedorchak and Wainz stand for and still have to vote for them, or not vote at all (…   more ›

$5,000 plus toward a campaign for a volunteer position?! Her brother attacks the teachers' union? Tacky. Her father rushes to her defense? How old is she that "daddy" has to defend her from public comments? Weak. After reading about her, it smells like she is being used to fulfill someone(s) or some party's agenda. Since when did school boards become political? Politics has no business when it …   more ›

Padberg Calls for Lower Property Taxes in the Mehlville School District

Fred Padberg is running for the Mehlville school board in April.

Fred Padberg is running for the Mehlville School District Board of Education so he can support a sales tax funding system for public schools and keep an eye on the money being spent for the district if elected. “What I am is a property owner who is sick and tired of paying property taxes and supporting a school system that A, I’ve never participated in and B, none of my children ever did and C, I think it’d be much more equitable and make a lot more sense to relieve people of this burden of property taxes and put it into a sales tax,” he said in an interview with Patch.  The candidate wants Mehlville Superintendent Eric Knost to ask state legislators to consider funding public education through a sales tax. This would solve financial …

I went to private religious schools and my children attended them. This happened because of a CHOICE I made for my family. It is and will forever remain a CHOICE for any and all who send their children there. To my greatest fortune I find myself employed by the Mehlville district after having spent an equal amount of time teaching in the private, (Catholic), schools. I have learned there is only …   more ›

Kathleen Eardley Wants to Continue Transparency on the School Board

Eardley is vying for a position on the board in April.

Kathleen Eardley said her children will be in Mehlville schools for the next two decades, and that’s why she is vying for a seat on the Mehlville School District Board of Education. “I have kids in the district, my little guy is in preschool and we’ve got 18 years where we’re committed to having kids in school so I really want to see good things for the district and I own property here in the district,” Eardley said. “I really would like to make sure that whatever the school’s doing reflects well on the community because it effects me directly.” In April, voters will choose two candidates from four to serve a three-year term on the Mehlville school board. At age 26, Eardley has an MBA from Fontbonne University and will be receiving a …

Wainz Aims to Continue School Board Progress

Mike Wainz is running in April for the Mehlville school board.

Mike Wainz has been talking for most of his life, working in radio for more than 15 years before becoming a stay-at-home dad and Mehlville school board candidate. In April, voters will choose two of four candidates to serve a three-year term.  Born in Texas, his family moved to Arnold, where he graduated from Fox in 1986. His wife Laura is a Mehlville graduate of 1987. The two met while working in the food court at the South County Mall. Wainz attended Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville for broadcast journalism, and joined the Air Force Reserves to help pay for college. Just 10 days after their marriage in 1990, Wainz was called to duty and served in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq during the Gulf War as part of the Air Force Reserves…
