Mehlville School Board Selects Contractor to Build High School Auditorium

Wright Construction Services, Inc., was awarded the bid to build Mehlville High School’s new auditorium.

Wright Construction Services, Inc., will build Mehlville High School’s new auditorium, the Mehlville School District’s Board of Education decided at Wednesday night’s meeting. The board approved the general contractor’s $5,134,000 base bid, which came in under the district’s budget of $6 million. Wright Construction’s bid was the lowest of the 16 the district originally gathered, coming in $182,600 below the bid average. Auditorium, Tennis Court Projects Go Out for Bid

Superintendent Eric Knost said the bids for the district's new tennis courts and first auditorium will go out on Monday for an October ground-breaking.

The district’s first auditorium and tennis courts are one step closer to breaking ground. Construction bids for the two projects will be posted on Monday, Superintendent Eric Knost told the board at Thursday’s meeting. He estimates both projects will break ground in October. Knost said he’d bring a recommended bid for the tennis courts at the September board meeting and one for the auditorium in October. The superintendent said he wanted a four-week bidding process—rather than two weeks—for the auditorium because of the intricacy of the project. Auditorium The board approved the district’s first auditorium in January and set a $6 million cap for the project. Knost still expects to be under budget. The 525-seat auditorium is proposed for …

Tennis Courts, Auditorium Closer to Construction

The tennis courts are set for completion in the fall with the auditorium following in the fall of 2013.

Two big facilities projects in the Mehlville School District are closer to starting construction, Superintendent Eric Knost reported at Thursday’s school board meeting.  The tennis courts, which will be located in front of Bernard Middle School, received approval from the Metropolitan Sewer District. After one more meeting with the engineer on details, final bids will be sent out. The bidding window will be open for three to four weeks, Knost said. Auditorium District architects are “absolutely focused” on the location for the Mehlville's first auditorium, Knost said. Construction is set to begin in October and finish by the fall of 2013.  Original location suggestions included the Witzel Learning Center and the north end of Mehlville High…

Projections Show District Auditorium Under Budget

Superintendent Eric Knost presented a preliminary budget at Thursday's board meeting. Also, the board passed a solar project for five district schools.

The preliminary budget for the district’s first auditorium is under budget by less than $2,000. The auditorium is estimated at $5,998,005—$1,995 short of the $6 million cap the board placed on the project. Superintendent Eric Knost presented an overview of the budget at the Mehlville school board meeting Thursday.  “I’m very excited, I think we’re that much closer, I think that this is just further proving we can accomplish this, we can stay within that $6 million that I’m adamant about,” Knost said. The budget projections are for the new location of the auditorium on the south side of the Mehlville High School campus. Knost previously proposed an auditorium attached to the Witzel Learning Center, and then planned for a location on the …

New Auditorium Changing Location at Mehlville High School

Superintendent Eric Knost said architects are looking at moving it from the north end of Mehlville High School to the south end.

With construction obstacles and increasing costs, Mehlville Superintendent Eric Knost said he was considering another location for the district’s new auditorium. The superintendent told the school board Wednesday that he asked district architects to examine moving the proposed auditorium from the north side of Mehlville High School to the south side. (See attached PDF of the north side proposal.) Knost cited problems with utility and large sewer lines at the north side location as well as soft soil. Although re-routing the sewer line would increase costs, Knost said the project could still be done within the $6 million cap. “But if we can get it done in a situation where we don’t have to move utilities and we don’t have that expense, well …

Dr. Knost is making a data-based decision. If he can stay within the budget, avoid extra expenses and provide a better facility, that's a good business decision. If the district has had issues with cost overruns in the past, it is because decisions were made without sufficient information. Many of our schools are located on less than ideal grounds because the initial price was cheap. Subsequent …   more ›

What Will Mehlville's New Auditorium Look Like?

At Wednesday's meeting, Superintendent Eric Knost showed the board drawings of the new auditorium.

The Mehlville School District’s first auditorium now has a face as Superintendent Eric Knost presented the school board with the most recent design drawings at Wednesday’s board meeting. Knost, who showed excitement as he presented the drawings, said work was progressing and the auditorium should still cost within the $6 million price cap. He said, however, that engineers have found a large sewer line running underneath the grounds where the auditorium will go. Construction will reroute that sewer, which will cost additional funds, but total costs still won't top $6 million, the superintendent said. The building has 545 seats—20 more than originally planned—and a main lobby Knost said could feature a district art gallery. “This still could…

Hosting graduation would require an auditorium three to four times the size of what we are constructing. It doesn't make a lot of sense to design a facility around an event that only happens once a year. Regardless, we wouldn't be able to afford an auditorium that size nor do we have the space for it on our existing campuses. Our auditorium will be very comparable to most high school's in the …   more ›

District Finances Stable Despite State Funding Questions

The Mehlville school board met Wednesday in a budget workshop.

The Mehlville School District is in a good financial frame of mind despite questions from funding at the state level, Chief Financial Officer Noel Knobloch said. Knobloch presented an estimate for this fiscal year, plus the next three years’ budget projections at a workshop with the school board on Wednesday. Revenues are about $1.7 million higher than planned because of additional state funding, Knobloch said. Expenses are also $800,000 less than budgeted because of reduced insurance costs and delays when purchasing supplies. In 2012-2013, Knobloch wrote that the district is in a strong financial position as a result of cost-cutting measures and a conservative budget approach over the last four years. Knobloch said he was conservative in …

Residents Weigh In on New Auditorium

Four residents spoke at Thursday's school board meeting.

The Mehlville High School band was preparing for one of the most prestigious musical performances in the state. In January, they played at the Missouri Music Educators Association in the Lake of the Ozarks. “A week prior to that performance, we had to rent Bayless High School’s auditorium in order to perform a concert to get the kids ready for performing in a different venue,” said Mehlville Band Parents Association President Kathi Hoyer. “I know that there are other schools in this district that rent Rickman Auditorium, Bayless, Affton for events and performances. We should keep the district's money here within the district.” Hoyer was one of four residents who spoke at Thursday’s school board meeting on the proposal for a new auditorium…

I am a professional musician and a former Mehlville High School graduate (1957.) The performance center has been badly needed for decades. We need a performance center for lectures, plays, chorus and band performances. Yes, I remember performing at the auditorium/gymnasium in the old high school. The classes were smaller and the acoustics were horrible. I am so very happy to see this dream become…   more ›

District Hires Architect for New Auditorium

Construction could be complete by fall of 2013.

Construction on the Mehlville School District’s first auditorium is slated to begin Aug. 27 with completion by Aug. 1 of 2013. Thursday, the Mehlville school board unanimously approved a contract for Dickinson Hussman Architects (DHA) to provide design and consulting services for the new auditorium. Their fee will be $427,290, which is 10 percent of the building and site costs. The fee is incorporated into the $5.8 million total cost of the auditorium and includes civil, structural and mechanical engineering; a building code consultant as well as architectural design. Superintendent Eric Knost said he and DHA have been working on the contract for the last month and the district’s attorneys have approved it. “To really get down to pricing …
