Oakville Boys Win a Shoot-Out Over Mehlville

The Tigers beat out the Panthers for the second time this season. This time it ended Mehlville's season.

In the end, the Oakville boys knew who to look for, and at 6-foot-9, sophomore Austin Gillman is easily spotted under the hoop. Gillman’s team-high 23 points—17 in the second half—kept Oakville in front of Mehlville, to win the first round of the Class 5 district playoff games 65-60. Fox is the tournament host. The first quarter was fairly even. Gillman had six points, but so did Mehlville senior forward Adis Mujakic, who was game-high with a 26-point total. Oakville head coach Nick Traxler was impressed with Mehlville’s play. He said the rivalry was a factor. “We had already beaten them once this year, so Mehlville came out ready to play,” he said. “They knocked some shots down they didn’t knock down the first time.” Mujakic had five …

Oakville Seniors Lead the Way in Downing Lindbergh

Tiger seniors hit three's to start, and free throws to ice it at the end.

Oakville’s seniors were money on senior night at home against Lindbergh in the final Suburban West Conference regular season game for both teams. Senior Austin Cibulka got things going with two 3-pointers, and senior Alec McChesney hit from the foul line to ice it. In the end, Oakville out-paced Lindbergh 48-42. Lindbergh ends the regular season at 4-4, (12-13 in Suburban West Conference). Oakville finishes at 5-3, (8-17 in conference). “Our seniors came out and set the tone early,” Oakville coach Nick Traxler said. “They had a great first five minutes of the game, and everybody was pumped up from there.” The score was 16-14 after the first quarter. The second period was almost even. The Tigers 6-foot-10 sophomore Austin Gillman hit for …

Oakville Boys Jump to Early Lead to Defeat Rival Mehlville

The Panthers cut into the first period deficit a bit, but nearly enough, in the Suburban West conference meeting.

The second game of the district rivalry meeting of the night was a reverse of the first. The Oakville boys jumped to a 21-5 first period lead over Mehlville, and held it to the end, winning 58-45. The Mehlville girls won the first game. See more photos from the games on our Facebook page. Oakville head coach Nick Traxler said the Mehlville-Oakville rivalry is always vicious, and he loves it. “It’s great for our district to have that,” he said. “Andy (Guethle) does such a good job with those guys, and we knew it was so important to come out strong. I thought we had a good first quarter, and that set the tone for our kids’ confidence.” Mehlville head coach Andy Guethle said his team was caught off-guard. “I thought the first half we could …

Oakville Boys Looking to Recapture Conference Title

The Tigers face off against Belvidere North Thursday in the Webster Tournament.

The Oakville High School boys basketball team is a young group wanting to make a big difference in the 2011-2012 season. The Tigers went 17-11 last year and are the defending Suburban West Conference champions. They've made it to the district championship game the last four years, and brought home their only second-place finish last season against Vianney, losing 48-43. “With how well we’ve done in the past, these guys think they have something to prove; they want to be part of that program that’s established and doing well,” said head coach Nick Traxler. Like the Oakville girls team, the boys team is young, losing four starters in five seniors. The Tigers' lone starting veteran is Austin Gillmann. The 6-foot, 10-inch sophomore forward was…

Season Recap: Oakville Seniors Rake in Honors

One year after making the Class 5 state championship game, the Tigers were unable to capture another district title.

It may not have been nearly as successful as their previous season, but the Oakville boys basketball team still earned plenty of postseason honors after this season. One year after making the Class 5 state championship game, the Tigers were unable to capture another district title. Oakville lost to Vianney, 48-43, on Feb. 25 in the Class 5 District 6 championship game at Lindbergh. The Tigers, which finished 27-5 last season, went 17-11 this season under head coach Nick Traxler. Oakville went 7-1 to tie Lafayette for the Suburban West Conference regular season title, and won none of its last 12 games. The most prominent postseason award went to Tigers senior Javier Duren, who was named the league’s player of the year. Duren, who will …

Back-to-Back Losses Plague Oakville Boys

The Tigers follow their conference loss to Mehlville with a poor outing at Webster Groves, losing 67-40 in a non-league affair.

Following a tough Suburban West Conference loss to Mehlville the previous evening, the Oakville boys basketball team faced the daunting task of bouncing back against the red-hot Webster Groves Statesmen on Wednesday night. The Tigers struggled to live up to the task, and absorbed a 67-40 loss to Webster. But the team put forth a strong effort, and coach Nick Traxler explained that his squad simply left too much on the table against Webster to earn the victory. “The effort was there tonight, it was a heck of a lot better than last night,” said Traxler, “But we missed at least 10 layups, and we missed 14 free throws, so we left over 30 points on the floor because we didn’t execute, and you cannot do that against Webster and win,” Traxler …

Oakville's Defense Smothers Fox in Easy Victory

Oakville dominates Fox with its stingy defense in a 54-17 win.

The Suburban West Conference game between the Oakville Tigers and Fox Warriors on Friday night ended much earlier than expected. This was not due to a bench-emptying brawl, power outage or any severe weather in the area. But rather because of the Tigers’ lead of over 30 points going into the final quarter that allowed the game clock to run continuously for the closing eight minutes because of a mandatory rule. Oakville (12-8, 4-0) easily secured the win with a 54-17 rout of the struggling Warriors (6-13, 0-5). At the end of the third quarter, the Warriors had yet to break double-digits. Oakville held a 45-9 lead, playing mostly underclassmen in the second half. “Our guys came out and understood, defensively, that we had to get up on their …

Oakville Senior Tandem Key to Program's Rise

The emergence of Javier Duren and Danny Zehner has helped the Tigers to back-to-back trips to the state championship semifinals.

Good teams need many good things to happen to go from being a solid team to a superior one. Talented players, passionate coaching, team chemistry and even luck are all common components of successful programs, with high school basketball being no exception. The Oakville Tigers have been blessed with many of the elements necessary to grow their program into one of significant stature, not only around St. Louis, but at the state level. An important piece of this puzzle has been the emergence of two teammates, who have developed into co-leaders as the Tigers have posted back-to-back trips to the state championship semifinals. On a recent Friday night in the Oakville High School gymnasium, with both sides of the stands singing and chanting in …

Oakville Boys Snap Skid With Victory Over Summit

The varsity Tigers defeat Rockwood Summit, 48-40, for a non-conference victory. Oakville is now 9-8.

The Oakville boys basketball team was back in Missouri on Tuesday night and now the Tigers are back on the winning track. Oakville lost three games last weekend in a tournament in Belleville but rebounded from that with a 48-40 non-conference victory at Rockwood Summit. The Tigers are now 9-8, and will play again on Wednesday at Farmington. "We had a tough week in Illinois," Oakville coach Nick Traxler said. "We played three pretty good teams (Belleville East, Belleville West and Collinsville) and didn't come away with a win. Tonight was not a pretty game, but we needed a win and got a win." It certainly was not pretty as the Tigers did not have a field goal in the fourth quarter but were able to convert 15 of 20 free throw attempts. …

Oakville Boys Stay in First Place With Key Road Victory

Oakville High School has won six straight games after winning at Parkway South on Friday, 41-36, to stay in first place in the conference.

Oakville brought a five-game winning streak to Parkway South on Friday evening for a contest with the 11-1 Patriots. The Tigers, at 7-5, were looking to not only extend their streak, but also to win a key conference game against a strong opponent as both teams look ahead to district competition. The aggressive defense of South prevented Oakville from finding its attacking rhythm for most of the game. But the Tigers rallied in the second half behind the determination of senior guard Javier Duren, who had 11 points on the night, to make it six victories in a row as Oakville won, 41-36. The Tigers are 3-0 and on top of the Suburban West Conference. Parkway South is 0-1. An already pumped up Parkway South crowd roared as the game started with …
