Approximately 550 students in the two high schools will have laptops in the fall.
More than 600 laptops and a new technician will be added to the district’s high schools in August. The school board unanimously voted to expand the district’s laptop pilot program at Thursday’s meeting. The pilot began this spring when one communication/arts class from each high school used laptops to learn from open sources on the internet. The district studied the students’ achievement and found success. Phase II of the pilot expands the laptops to math, science and social studies classes. Knost estimated the cost at $428,510, about $171,000 less than the allocated $600,000 he originally asked for Phase II of the program. “We really see this becoming one of our central themes and our big focuses over the next number of years,” Knost said…

The Tigers will take on No. 1-seeded Cor Jesu Wednesday.
Mehlville defeated the Tigers on their way to a second-place finish in the district tournament.
Mehlville got sweet revenge Friday night as they defeated cross-town rival Oakville in two games, 25-19 and 25-19. The Panthers previously fell to the Tigers on Senior Night at Oakville, but won when it counted at the Class 4 District 1 tournament, also hosted at Oakville. “That’s a big hump that our school has fought to get over for awhile,” Mehlville coach James Fischer said. “They’ve owned us. Finally getting over that hump is beautiful.” Mark Leininger led in kills for Mehlville with eight, but sophomore Ryan Hoyer tacked five, showing his worth in the postseason. “Ryan Hoyer is a star in the making. As a sophomore, he’s gone through the process, he’s had some developing to do,” Fischer said. “I expect big things from him in the future…

The Tiger volleyball team lost three out of four matches Friday.
The Oakville volleyball season is over after what first-year coach Kelsey Husak called a rebuilding year. With only one returning varsity player from the state champion team, the squad lost three out of four matches in the district tournament Friday. The Tigers fell to Mehlville in two games 25-19, but won the second match against Fort Zumwalt West in three, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12. After a 25-19, 25-16 loss to De Smet, Husak said the Tigers had fun in their last match against Northwest. The Lions won 25-11 and 25-23 to finish Oakville's season. The coach said the team played the best against De Smet, but after the Spartans went on a few runs, the Tigers could not catch up. See more photos from the tournament on our Facebook page.
Also, baseball districts start this weekend.
The Affton baseball team was coming off an offensive explosion entering Thursday's non-conference contest against Mehlville. The Cougars defeated McCluer South-Berkeley 29-3 Wednesday, scoring nine runs in the first inning, nine more in the second and eight in the third in the four-inning game. Affton should have saved some runs for Thursday, as it went from scoring 29 runs to being shut out by the Panthers. Senior southpaw Aaron Onkle pitched five scoreless innings as the Panthers defeated Affton 10-0 in six innings. "That was the longest outing in Aaron's career," Mehlville coach Tim Ode said. "We have used him in several different scenarios although he has not pitched that much. He had one other start, against Parkway South, which he …
