View Finder: Children Enjoy a Final Day In the Cardboard Castle

The Reading Habit(at) puts on a final party before closing up shop at its Oakville location and taking its show on the road.

The Reading Habit(at) is shedding its cocoon and growing wings, as it prepares to shut down its Oakville location, and owner Jennifer MacAdam-Miller is excited about the metamorphosis. She has plans to turn the Reading Habit(at) into a traveling version of what it already is, a place for children to experience literary playfulness. The first stop for the Reading Habit(at) will be Joplin, Mo., in July. MacAdam-Miller is working with a United Methodist church there to set up a live version of the Nira Harel book, The Key to My Heart.  In the book a father and son retrace their steps to find a set of lost keys. MacMiller-Adam is working to set up stations for Joplin families to visit when they read the book, with real postal workers and …

The Girl Scouts Daisy Troop teamed up with Reading Habit(at) on Telegraph to make book boxes for their April service project.

Each child is asked to bring books to Reading Habit(at) they are no longer reading to donate to the Book Baskets Project. In general, the project is seeking gently used children’s books. To learn more, click here.

Girl Scouts Celebrate April With Service Projects

The Book Baskets Project and April Showers community service project highlight the month’s activities.

If April showers indeed bring May flowers, many families and children in the St. Louis area will bloom from the Girl Scouts’ generosity. Today marks the beginning of the Girl Scouts’ 14th annual April Showers community service project. For the next three days, Girl Scout troops will deliver green April Showers bags to area homes. Residents are encouraged to donate soap, shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste and any other personal care items, which cannot be purchased with food stamps. The Girl Scouts will return to collect the bags April 16. “Personal care items are important for cleanliness and good health as well as positive self-esteem and a sense of well being,” Donna Martin, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, said in a statement. “…
